Rear Diff Maintainance after ONLY 15,000???
Is it just me or does changing the rear diff oil every 15,000miles worth it? I gotta take my 05' 1500 in for service sometime this month and after reviewing the service schedual dodge says you gotta do this every 15,000. Not to mention it'll be an extra $170 on top of the oil change cause the diff fluid is a full synthetic oil which I was always under the impression that the full synthetic oils were suppose to be longer lasting. But still I've just barely put almost 15,000 on it and haven't towed anything or put it under any real stress so it seems kind of pointless to me. Is there any reason why they say its required every 15,000?
15,000 is usually for severe use. In other words a lot of towing/hauling/wheeling/etc. 25,000-30,000 is a more acceptable service interval.
In the older Rams, they didn't have ANY interval listed for differential fluid change. [:'(]

Well I havent been doing any of that Ive taken maybe 4 trips up to the mountains since I bought it last year not towing or hauling anything but light gear in the bed. everything else has been city/highway driving.
Thanks for the guide on how to do it thats gonna help alot if I do it my self. But why does it have to be done every 15,000 If Im not doing much of anything but daily driving though?
I did it at 15K to do two things. Check out the internals to make sure everything was kosher. This is especially true on the LSD because of the C clips that have a tendency to fall out. Make sure everything is good to go. Second was to get all the initial metal shavings and crap out of there from the gears wearing in.
If nothing, follow the A schedule for maintenance. This way they can't deny any claim due to improper maintenance.

I just changed my rear fluid last week, and plan on doing the front diff. in another week or so. I did mine at 19k. I changed mine for 2 reasons. First was because they say to do it. Secondly, I wanted to install my cool new PML diff. cover. I'm sure some of you have seen them. I bought it for a few other reasons. The biggest plus is not having to remove the cover to change the fluid, because it has a drain plug. It also holds more fluid; is finned; and has port for a temp sender. Keep an eye open for another post from me if you wanna see some pics. I'm gonna make a post with all my new mods and pics.
