what to put for better fuel millage?
I'm looking to put parts on my truck, 2005 ram 2500 HD hemi, to get better fuel millage. I get arround 8-10 MPG on a 128 liter fuel tank it sucks cause 4 of my buddys have 04's 2500 with hemi also and they doo constant 19-20 MPG, why??? I intalled a tornado and K&N drop in filter with absolutly no change, same bad millage, I'm looking to get a exhaust system and superchip next, any help would be appreciated with any more suggestions. Just too let you know, the style of driving does not change my millage, I can be cruising 100 KPH all empty or going 140 KPH fully loaded and have only about 1-2 MPG difference.
BTW why do they hold back soo much power on those trucks, apperently they only give out abour 50-60% of there full power??? Give us every ponny it can give!

Your driving style is the most determinant factor in mileage. If yer revving it up after every stop your mileage is going to be bad. Use a light foot on the throttle and you'd see an increase. Your mileage sounds like city driving while your friends mileage sounds like highway. 19-20 with a few mods on the 2500 seems like 95% of their miles would be on the highway, yours sounds like 95% of your driving is in the city. There isn't much you can do about stop and go all the time. One thing you can do is put a bed cover on, I put one on my truck just yesterday and saw a small increase already.
I have the same truck, reg cab 06 2500 4x4 5.7 6sp, I'm still adjusting tire pressures to find the best economy, I have atained 17 MPG on the highway, a lot of my city driving is in the 10 to 14 MPG range, I doubt I can do much better with my driving habit's but this truck is in the ball park of a 04 F-50 4x4 5.4 that I drove before the Ram.
I also use mid grade, I don't know yet if it's worth the extra cost, but the Dodge book says to use it. I 'm over a 1000 KM now, Shes a monster that likes to run fast.

Actually, i'm more of a highway driving style, one of my freinds put 38" toyo tires, a 3" lift and he is really heavy on the foot cause he likes to let his truck screem out and still manages to get arround 18-20 mpg. I have 35" tires with no lift kit, with OEM or with my oversize tires I had no difference in the MPG, this truck is just a constant guzeller. We also raced one another and man does his truck go way more then mine, he is like 5 trucks in front of me after 1/4 mile, I found that there is a big difference in performance between the year's 2003.5 limited eddition/2004 and the ones from 2005. We have the same equipement, same gears, had same tire size same truck exept for the year. Just want to point out that I live in Canada and the motors might be tuned differently, I don't know!
First off get rid of the tornado it does nothing for you and if any thing blocks more air than what it takes in. Next You need to let the truck breathe so put a good CatBack exhaust System on it and put in a full CAI (cold air intake) System. Next Add a superchips tuner and set it to the 87 octane setting for better mileage/performance and use a higher quality fuel 89+ octane (if its not a desiel). After that its all up to your foot go nice and easy and you'll see a steady increase. Also you can add a bed cover but it wont make that much of a difference if any. These trucks were designed with basically an air bubble of air behind the cab in the bed that creats less of a drag from the air hitting your bed/tailgait as you drive. Also do a regukar maintaince and make sure your tires are properly filled and all that good stuff and disconnect and reconnect your negative battery cable to reset your pcm and do a reset on the overhead as well and you shoud see an improvement

Im just poking fun... gadgets dont do much at all... the tornado has been proven to do NOTHING for performance what so ever on our trucks... The K&N drop in is costing you -4 -5HP and 1-2MPG, so put the stock paper filter back in untill your ready for a full CAI (Cold Air Intake). In my personal experience with the 3rd gen Ram, I have found the best things you can do for mods are:
1) 4.56's which have been know to increase fuel economey from 0MPH to 65-70MPH.
2) Electric Fan, remove your clutch fan and install a good electric fan. Its worth 10RWHP.
3) Free Flowing exhaust system... dont go too large. for the HEMI keep the stock 3"ID single and just replace the "y" Pipe and muffle. For the 4.7L replace the from the "Y" and go single 3" all the way out. Stay with the 3"ID SISO systems for best all round torque on both the 5.7L and 4.7L.
4) true Cold Air Induction system... A good system is worth and AVERAGE of 10-12RWHP... look for average gains NOT peak gains... the peak gains are allways more but are never felt.... you feel the average gains.
Those are my top 3 for the 3rd Gen Rams.
As for the bed cover... I honestly did not receive any noticable gains with my cover.. It looks good though and I can lock it... so for that Im pleased.
SPEED SAFE, AIR RAM
How about a bet AirSham?
You and I put up $30,000 cash each
and let the moderators at Dodgeforum hold the money.
Then we get a three person team to judge whether your suggestions for MPG improvement
are superior to the suggestions I make in the weblink to the FAQ above.
I suggest for the 3 person judging team:
1. Retired Chrysler and General Electric engine wizard Tom Hoover.
Tom Hoover is the 'godfather of the 426 Hemi and the 340'
and also the guy whose fuel economy improvement work took General Electric Co from having 20% of the USA Locomotive business to having 80% of the business. He is in the SAE Hall of Fame.

Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?
If legendary Texan Carroll Shelby, or Roger Penske, or Richard Petty would agree to serve as judges I would readily agree to any of them as well.
