5 speed auto in an '03?
I have an '03 1500 QC 4.7 and I swear my glove box sticker says it's a 5 speed automatic. I've read a few posts talking about the "new" 5 speed auto in their '06. I haven't counted my shifts yet but do I have an oddball truck or is the sticker wrong?
Neither - technically it IS a 5 sp, the way it works is: you have 4 normal fwd gears, except there is an extra 2nd gear. You have the normal 2nd for normal acceleration and regular up shifts. Its when you're in overdrive and lock up moping along, and some Honda just pisses you off. So you punch it - and it kicks down to a different ratio 2nd gear, that way it isnt as far to go rpm wise as the normal 2nd gear. So this 'other' 2nd gear is for accelerating downshifts....literally a passing gear!
Depends upon what transmission you have. Most likley the 45RFE in your 4.7. It came out in 99 and I believe is still in use today. The 545RFE came out in 2001. Not exactially sure what trucks got what transmissions, but my 04 hemi has the 545RFE.

Not according to my information. Dodge lists the 5-45RFE as being available in the 2003 model year with the 4.7L engine. The confusion might be due to the fact that some 2003 models still had the 5.9L engine with the 46RE transmission and, although I see no listing of the 4.7L with any other transmission other than the 5-45RFE, I suppose it is possible that the 46RE was put in some early 2003 models.
It appears that Dodge started using the 5-45RFE in both, the 4.7L and 5.7L upon the introduction of the Hemi in later 2003 models. Anyone having better information than this, please feel free to correct me.
The 545RFE, or true 5 speed, is only behind the 5.7L hemi.

I know I have the 45RFE, I wonder if it is possible to retrofit the 545?
