I usually run 89. I did notice a mild power increase going to 89. These motors have a knock sensor on them that will retard the timing if a knock is sensed...typically before you would ever hear it (at least that's what I have been told). So, while 87 may be acceptable, I've noticed better performance with 89. I tried a couple of 50/50 mixes with e85 and I felt that there was another increase with that mix, but the mileage was terrible. My truck is not certified for e85, but I read that almost every vehicle manufactured after sometime in the 90's could handle the occasional mistaken tankful of e85 without long term harm. I'm going to stick to 89 e10, but I'll still run some e85 through it from time to time to help clean everything up.
I use 89 Octane. In the 2006 Dodge Ram Truck Owner's Manual on page 485 on the bottom line it states as follows:
Fuel Selection (5.7L)...89 Octane, (R+M)/2 Method, Mid-Grade Preferred (87 Octane acceptable)
Fuel Selection (5.7L)...89 Octane, (R+M)/2 Method, Mid-Grade Preferred (87 Octane acceptable)
thanks for your input y2k6ram, i would have checked my owners manual but i don't have it yet because the stealership still has my truck as they must fix a recall before i can take posession.
