Default Newbie RAM owner Qs

Hello, I am new here. This is a very nice site!

I have an 03 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. 50K miles. It is a very nice truck. The more I drive it, the more I love it.

Just a few Qs

Where is the oil filter?

What is the best oil, and best filter to use?

I dont do much long distance driving, just several short trips. I probably put about 15 miles a day on average give or take. The manual says to change the oil more frequently if you do alot of short trips. So, when would be the best time to change the oil?

The manual doesnt do a good job of walking you through the maintenance procedures. I know I can do most of the maintenance myself, I just dont know where things are located on the truck.

Oh, I want to change the spark plugs too. The manual says that it is overdue about 20K miles. But it looks tricky.

O.K. I hope I didnt upset anyone, this being my first post and all. I just got this truck and I really like it. I want to take really good care of it. Thank you for any help.

Welcome to the club.

The oil filter is on the passenger side towards the front of the motor on the bottom. You can see it from the front of the truck looking underneath. Getting to it without spillin oil all over the place is another thing. Don't forget to rub a little new oil on the rubber gasket of the new filter before putting it on. And just HAND tighten it.

Yup, the plugs are a pita. Just takes time and don't break anything.

Good luck.

Well it says change it more frequently with all new cars, just change it every 3k and youll be fine, the newer vehicles can actually go about 5k on regular oil, using the extended life oils dont really effect much, you can go alittle more than 3k miles and not worry bout it, ive put 6k on my truck, ive had it for a month and a half. Only changed the oil once, and that was right when i got it.

Come to think of it i shoud go change the oil....

Congrats and welcome! As far as best oil and filter, that is a bit of controversy. I personally like Mobil 1 oil and Purolator filters even though I've also used Fram ToughGard (one of thier "best" ones) with no problems, but I prefer the Purolator filters.

You'll also need the factory service manual for the Ram. You can download it on this forum in the top section of the 3G first page.
