Default Need help on engine package.

Hey everyone, I'm looking at a 2002 Ram Crew Cab that has a 4.7lL engine in it. I've always wanted a 02 or newer Ram and this will be my first full size pickup truck. The problem is that I currently own a 95 Z28 that is has about as much mods in it then what I bought it for, so I'm kinda a sucker for power. Now I know if I want power to go for the Hemi, but I can't afford one right now, and I have a need for a truck to haul my 4 wheelers, jetski and a streetbike. Basically what I need to know is how is the 4.7L compared to the 5.9L. With the right bolt on's, can the 4.7 perform like the stock 5.9's. I just want it to be able to pass a car without having to get two much of a running start if ya know what I mean. I ask this with my buddy’s in the Camaroz28 forums, and all that own Rams or Durango's told me to go Hemi, but I can't afford to, plus I'm not looking for high performance, just something that will get the job done without me wanting more. So I thought I'd pop in here and ask the experts

Judging from your title, you're no doubt a Suzuki GXR rider.....with a need for speed.
I can't speak about the 5.9, but i do have the 4.7 LTR V-8 which has plenty of power. And judging from what others have said on this forum, with the right modifications, i.e., Cold Air Intake, Exhaust systems, you can get alot of power out of the 4.7LTR.
You will no doubt get additional answers to your question. This is my two cents worth, for whatever that's worth.

I agree, I have an 03 4.7L with no mod's (yet). I tow 2 large ATV's with no problem. the other 90% of my driving is fine too, I don't usually have a problem with traffic cuz I'm usually in front....

If you want the Hemi go for it! I'm not sure why you think a Hemi costs more in the used market? I just bought my 04, 2 weeks ago. I looked at a lot of Rams & the Hemi didn't seem to affect price. For example I looked at an almost identical truck to the one I bought but it had the 4.7. The truck was actually more expensive & had more miles on it compared to the one I bought. All the trucks I looked at were at Dodge dealers. Shop around man, and get what you really want!! Oh and from what I've heard, the 4.7 won't necessarily be better on mileage.

Cheers
Sean

Well I'm going to test drive it Monday afternoon. I will own a Ram one day and hopefully soon. It's pretty much the only full size I've been wanting for the past few years now. After I drove a 2000 Ram 2500, I was in love with the Rams, and have been wanting one ever since. I may test drive a 5.9l just for a test between the two. But yes owning a Z28, a Gixxer, a SeaDoo XP, a 250r, and a haul azz 4x4 4 wheeler, I do have a taste for speed. I am going to look around a bit before I jump on this one. Most Dodge dealers can look at there data base and find something similar to what I really want for the price, even though I may have too drive a bit to see it. A friend of mine did something similar when he was looking for his Silverado. It came from another state actually, so I will use that option as well. I was just wondering if nothing else pops up that’s in my price range, how the 4.7 would do. They only want 11K for this one, so it will be hard to beat. Here is a pic of the truck I'm talking about.

The 5.9 has much more torque than the 4.7. I had a 5.9 Ram4x4 quad cab at the time and when the 4.7 came out I test drove one. The 4.7 is more on par with the 5.2L 318.

I own a 2006 hemi ram and a 1998 ram 5.2 on 33's. The 5.2 on 33's loaded with two dirbikes gear tools and all that was always enough power. Also, the 4.7 liter is not bad. my mom has a durango with a 4,7 and it is faster than my 5.2 ram. My hemi however is much more powerful than my 5.2 or my moms 4.7 but for what you want a stock 4.7 should be fine.

Great looking truck. And at that price, you can't go wrong.
