Driving home from work my check engine light decidied to come on. I checked the code using the key on/off trick and comes up with a P 0442. Any clue what that error code means and possible problems/ fixes.
It is a small evap system leak. Make sure your gas cap is tight, if it is replace it. The cap could be bad causing that code to set. If neither of those fixes it, you will be looking at alot of dollars spent searching for a leak in the EVAP system.
sometimes you can get that code if you leave the gas cap lose after a fill up and run the engine with it loose. If you can get a superchip pak or hipertech unit, to read the code directly , it will give you the option to delete the code from the ecu. Just think back to see if you may have not tighten the cap all the way. I did it and got the same code, erased it the next day and never got it again. Hope this is also your problem. Good luck.
Thanks for the input guys. I put gas in the truck 250 miles before it happenned. I cleared the code and removed/ re tightened the gas cap. I will see what happens next.
If it comes on again get underneath the truck and check the formed rubber hoses going in to the charcoal box (right in front of the gas tank) That's what made mine come on...
sorry it took me so long to reply. I've been on dirt bike forums lately....Yeah.. It was cracked. I got really stiff heater hose and clamps to replace it. Works great....
