should i get a cummins
hi. i just got my truck about a year ago. i love my truck. its a 2004 QC. ive got a 5" suspension lift with 35" tires. the truck has a 4.7L in it. so im not really to happy with the power. but ive always wanted a desiel. so now this guy is offering me this 2001 ext cab short bed cummins that has a banks turbo system in it. he said he wont be ready to sell the truck for another year. what he plans on doing is trading in the truck. so so he told me i should go right in behind him and trade in my truck for it (since the price of my truck will pretty much cover the cummins). so should i try and get the truck?
take the time to do all the research you need to do on it now. there are some issues with the injection pump and lubrication (lack of enough)... that is the biggie so make sure you do your research.
coming from a CTD owner... you wont regret it! I love mine!

get a cummins. few more things to watch out for are #53 blocks, they were put in 2nd gen diesels and i think they stopped in 01 but check on the block for a number before you buy it. also, if he had work done like that turbo kit make sure he has a pyrometer so he knows if his motor got wayyyy too hot. honestly I think it's best to buy a stock mint condition one, but good luck and cummins is where it's at. someday i will own one.
if he has an aftermarket lift pump to ensure the injector pump is not starved of fuel there wont be any issues there. it sounds like it would be a stout truck. the previous posts have hit on some good points to look for.
There may be a better way to do it. Tell the dealer up front what's going on and you agree on a price with your friend. I did that once and the dealer handled the paperwork for $300.00 It saved me a lot of sales tax and kept the dealer profit out for my friend that was buying my Durango.
In my opinoin its kinda moving backwards. i love how they look but now looking at them they just seem old now with the 3rd gen. truck that has been out for some time now. thats just me though. but they are awesome trucks no question about it. having the banks on it would be awesome. alot of respect to them when they take off from a red light.

Shoud you get a cummins?..... First do you need a cummins, just wanting one for the name is a waste of money, 7 grand +, thiers a extra cost's with maintance over and above a gas engine, to justify the extra cost's your going to have to work the truck for all it's potential ove and above a gas engine.
If you want a mega cab, get the cummins, if your going to tow over 12,000 pounds, get the cummins, empty the cummins and the hemi are prety close milage wise ( 2500 ) but when towing or hauling the same lbs, the cummins has better milage and more power.
The 5.7 in my 2500 reg can 4x4 6sp manual is awsomely stout, I have no problem towing 10,000 lbs...
