87 or 89?
I used 87 for a while bacl when gas was at such an un goddly price and the 87 was actually I beileve .20 under all the rest. Now days I only use 89 or higher because my truck gets better mileage (hand calculated) and seems to be more responsive and pack a little more of a bang. I also think that spending an extra buck while filling up isn't that big of a deal now so why not go for the better stuff if it means I will be able to fill up once every other week instead of every weekend.

First off, I use 89, and always will (or higher). I think we can all agree that Engine Knocking is a bad thing, right? Ok, lets see... all of you with either a CAI, or aftermarket exhaust raise your hands. For those of you that raised your hands, do you really think that you can hear knocking? The knocking that 87 octane will or could cause is going to be so quiet that you'd never hear it over your intake system. Another point I'd like to point out, there are many people on here that don't really know a lot about their trucks or have an automotive background. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ragging on the guys that don't have mechanic backgrounds, but the point is most people can't hear or even know what their hearing when the engine IS knocking. Octane knocking isn't like a tired diesel engine knocking, its quiet for the most part. I use 89 becuase my mileage is good now, and has been since I've had the truck. It's also piece of mind. Its not like DCX recommends 89 in all their cars/trucks. If they did, then you'd think something was up, and then you could argue thats it not needed, but only the Hemi needs 89 (not including SRT vehicles of course). Thats just my $.02

I always use 87, octane in my 04 Hemi. But as the manual says if your going to tow something use 89. So last week I filled the Silver Eagle up with 89 oct. ,Then when my tank got to half way I got some more 89 , so tomorrow I'm going to Maryland to tow my boat home for the winter. The computer was reading 10.9 with the 87 and I never get a ping.A little while ago it was reading 9.4 with the 89 octane .I wonder how low it will get while towing the boat. Now before they started making this new ethenol gasoline I was getting 13.5 towing the boat in the summer. and on a trip I got up to 17.1 using 87 octane. But this year the winter blends are awful.

I towed my boat back home yesterday and I got 11.8 miles per gallon. I used 9.5 gallons of gas. I then filled it back up with 87 octane and drove the truck around one hundred miles last evening. I got 14.4 miles per gallon. I filled it up at a station in MD where they don't sell Ethenol blended fuels.Today I'm going on enother 100 mile trip.and I just filled it up again with 87octane fuel. I don't like leaving without a full tank of gas. I only paid $1.99 for the 87 octane. So we'll see how it does today. no load just going back to MD to pick up some stuff to bring home from our summer home on the Chesapeake bay.The truck is a 04 Quad Cab Hemi 4x4 ThunderRoad. only has 16,000 miles on it.
