Default 2006 Ram - OEM GPS & GPS Installation

I own a 2006 Ram 1500 2X4 SLT. Stereo system is the factory Infinity with the 6 CD changer.

Looking for some advice and some photo’s

I am considering purchasing the Dodge GPS system for this vehicle. I understand (and my understanding my be incorrect) that the Dodge GPS system includes the factory Infinity stereo with the 6 CD changer.

I assume that the GPS system is about 2 inches taller in height which would require replacing the center dash bezel.

My questions:

Anyone have a photo of a factory GPS system installed in their 06 Ram?

Anyone successfully installed one?

Mahalo

Eric

Yes it is an all in one unit, Nav, 6 disc cd player that plays mp3's, and Sirius Tuner. The center dash bezel does have to be replaced. i do not have any tips because the dealer installed mine.

The dash bezel is replaced. They are around ~$90. Do you know if the wirind is already there? Where is the GPS antennae located? I am considering this same mod at this time.

The wiring is already there. It's a simple plug in install. Once you have the dash panel off, the radio swap should take 20 minutes tops.

The GPS antenna goes in the middle of the dash between the defroster vents. It slides in. Not a big deal.

I bought my REC (Dodge Factory GPS/6 DISC changer) for $949 with the manual, latest Nav disc and the GPS antenna.

The thing i had to buy extra was the new bezel and i bought an ipod install kit.

i would look around for the aftermarket in dash GPS systems, i didnt like dodges in dash and already had a 600 portable one... i personally like the portable ones more since i fly a lot, you need a nav system in the rental car when youre not familiar with that city, vs the 95% of the time you spend in your own city with your truck...

Just an FYI, the Sirius tuner is NOT part of the REC unit. It's a seperate box mounted in the vehicle under the dash. The Nav/CD unit simply has the features to control the Sirius tuner. So if you already have Sirius and are adding one of these REC radio's, then you do not need to transfer Sirius service over or anything like that.

Sure, from a practical standpoint if you travel alot in cars other then your own, a portable unit is great. But having owned a Tom Tom and the top of the line Garmin unit, i still MUCH prefer the Dodge REC unit. The voice guidance through the stereo speakers with the auto volume turn down of your music is great as well as the larger screen and cleaner appearence. I hate visible wires and suction cup brackets and the like. You have to keep taking it off the dash to prevent theft wherever you go which is annoying as well. My insurance policy also is limited to items not permanently mounted in the vehicle. Even though my REC unit was not standard, because it's an OEM vehicle item and it's permanently mounted, it's fully covered.

While i certainly reccomend anybody considering buying the factory REC unit to actually see one in person and drive with it, you may find a portable unit is better suited from the portablility stanpoint.
