03 1500 4X4 Rear Axle Seals...
...one is shot. Common problem? Warranted item under the 7/70 drivetrain? I can't find any info and the dealer's answer is very nebulous. Can't get a straight answer. Someone actually told me that the seal is covered, but no collateral damage is.
Oh, yeah...3.92 Anti-Spin.
Cheers,
Bob

Seems like most folks get to replace their pinion seal at least once before 100k mi. Often before 50k mi. They're relatively easy to replace for a backyard mechanic with average skill. My special tool to drive the seal: a piece of 1/4 plywood with a hole cut just big enough for spline and a 16 oz hammer. If I recall, it was 1 to 1.5 hour job that included popping the cover and refilling with new gear oil--75W145 synthetic with LSD additive.
The real trick is to watch the darn thing for leaks. My brother-in-law ignored my warnings about oil sprayed up on the underside of the bed above diff. He towed a 1,600 lbs monument (tombstone) for 500 miles with only a pint of gear oil. Complained about strange noises from the rear. We pull the cover. It had so overheated, the oil had coked in some places. And, oh yes. We had a handful of metal. Rebuild time...
I'd replace the seal at the first sign of any seepage.
