Default 20" "Chrome Clad Wheel" Warning!!

I have a 06 Ram 1500 Sport with the chrome clad 20" wheels (thechrome is actually a plastic covering on the face of the wheel). I just had a flat tire and I went to the local tire store to get it repaired. When they put the wheel and tire in the machine to break the bead the machine cracked the chrome plastic surface on the wheel. My Dodge dealer informed me that this plastic trim is not serviced seperatly and that a new wheel willcost me$744.00. BE CAREFUL WHEN CHANGING TIRES with this wheel.

100% agree. The tire shop is responsible for damage to a wheel.

I had a nail in one of my rear Viper tires once. The first place I walk into I roll the wheel to them. I said are you sure you want to do this. The tire is over 13" wide and very low profile and the rim has NO protection lip. They said no problem. I said OK. Went across the street to do some shopping, came back 30 minutes later and they decided not to do it. They did not want to damage the wheel as it woudl have cost them dearly.

I think your dealer is trying to rip you off, big time! I've seen the '06/'07 chrome clad wheels available through a Dodge dealer online for, as I recall, approximately $225.

Did it crack the wheel or the cover? I was under the impression that the new 'clad' wheels were designed so that when you scuffed a curb you could go by the 20" hubcap a lot cheaper than a full wheel.

By new do you mean the 06+ wheels? I know the 02-05 wheels you can not do that.

Either way it's a good excuse to get some real wheels and spruce up your rig.
Do it...do it now.

That's funny because I went to the local Dodge dealer where I bought my truck last year and they said they didn't have the right tire machine to swap the 20" tires. I ended up at the local Goodyear - and they set me up with all four fairly fast with no issues.

I think the dealer is trying to break one off in you, and if it were my truck the local tire shop would bebuying me a rim.

Check out ebay - two on there for $150 - 175
