Remote starting an '07 Ram?
The place I called about a remote start said I needed a grey key/valet key. When I hit the dealer up for it they said only remote keys were available for '07s at $185.60. So anyone have a solution that doesn't involve me paying as much for a key as the starter? Also if anyone has experience with various Remote starts I'd like to hear them. Recomendations/horror stories?
I have an astrostart 2 way remote start and I like it. It locks, unlocks, has an info check, and has a range of about half a mile outdoors. The place that put it in only needed my two factory keys to program the chip that bypasses the security in the truck. It was pretty spendy though (most likely due to the range and the 2 way capability that notifies me when it starts successfully) at $400 installed.
they just need extra keys made from your factory keys--just reg keys
they will use the chip out of 1 of your factory keys to bypass the
pass key system. most places will take care of making the keys for you.
it is a complicated install to adapt to the can bus system
there are alot of relays and modules needed in addition.
if they arent charging you much, they probably arnt doing it right

You will need to take thetransponder out of one of your keys and get it as close to your igntion lock as possible and mount it there. Thismakes the truck thinkthat you are startingit with thetransponder key, after doing that you can go to walmart or anywhere and havejust a regular key cut. Also it would not be a bad idea to keep the other transponder key in your truck somewhere. My work installed one on my 06 ram and thats howwe do it.
Go on ebay, I bought 2 transponder keys for $40.00 shipped! Do a search on ebay, if you can't find it, let me know and I'll find it for ya!!! They work great and you can program them yourself as long as you have 2 functioning keys now, instructions for programming keys are in your owners manual. The local dealer even cut the keys for me at no charge!
Hope you guys are right, I got a gray key for $18 shipped. I'd be mad as hell if I dropped almost $200 for something I could get for under $20. I'll let ya know how it works... Cheers!
