fiberglass insulation in doors
hey all,
It's been a while since I've been on the forum, holidays and family events etc. But I've made a couple of mods to my truck that I wanted to mention. I'll post about my custom exahust in a separate post for more clear discussion (if any).
After putting the exhaust on, I found the droning on the highway to be quite irritating. like a hammer. Even my twelve year old, who harassed me to put the exhaust back on for a year, got a wicked headache from it. It's the low RPM, maybe 1500-1750, where it's bad.
I always wondered about the sound-deadening mats they sell, and knew that in my house fiberglass insulation is a great sound insulator. At my local super-sized home improvement mega-warehouse, they sell 2" by 4' by 4' sections of fiberglass insulation. I thought, at $3 a roll, I'd buy a few and give it a try.
Using instructions from the guy who posted about the door rattling fix (removing the plastic inside the panel), I removed the panels off the front and rear doors, one at a time. The panels have hooks that hold the panel to the door; I used these hooks to hold the fiberglass in place. I put the panels back on per those instructions.
I could not believe how much difference it's made. I could even tell just shutting the door that it felt more solid. Just this small amount of insulation in the doors made it ride quieter. The radio sounds better, at lower volumes. It didn't eliminate the drone entirely on the highway but it took the worst of it away. I mean, i still want to hear that nasty exhaust I put on it, anyway.
I did get overzealous on the driver-side door, so the panel isn't tight enough. I have to remove some of the insulation, like I did on the passenger side, and it'll be awesome. If it's not tight, the door panel rattles when any bass note plays on the radio.
Anyway, hopefully somebody else can benefit from this cheap trick I found.

This "sounds" (excuse the pun) like a decent mod for those that appreciate a quieter interior. However, my concern is that water/moisture might build up in the insulation and cause some corrosion inside the door cavity. Did you do anything to prevent water from getting into the insulation?
