2006 Dodge Ram Exhaust Question
Hello all,
I have a question about my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. First off I love this truck, lots of power, handles well, and very comfortable. My biggest complaint on this truck is the exhaust system. The Hemi is such a great sounding engine but you can't hear it (Stock exhaust system). My question is I would like to change this system to give it more sound but don't have a lot of money to spend on an aftermarket exhaust system. What would I get by replacing the stock muffler with an aftermarket muffler say a Flowmaster super 40 or a glass pack of some sort? I would like to stay with a single exhaust and I don't want the exhaust to get tooobnoxiously loud (not that that is a bad thing). Also what size (diameter) muffler will fit? Any reccomendations you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am also looking for exhaust for my Hemi. After asking 2 shops about the Flowmaster 40, they both said it would cause a droning sound inside the truck. They recommended a 50 series muffler. Here's the link to Flowmaster mufflers:

Take a look at the exrerior/interior comparisons to the left of each muffler. Then just decide how much sound you can deal with. There's also sound bytes to listen to.Hope this helps!

I felt the same way when I got my truck. I just went to my local muffler shop and got his thoughts on it. He put a dual outlet magnaflow muffler on it, then duals from there and turned out behind rear wheels with chrome tips. Sounds a lot better but not too loud that your head is pounding going down the highway. He said glasspacks and a Hemi would be real loud. Neighbor had his turned down under the truck and you can't even talk when riding it resonates inside the cab so bad.

I have this system on my 4.7 quad cab and it sounds deep and throaty almost like a hemi. With your hemi it should sound even better. The best thing of all there is no drone in the cabin justthat great muscle truck sound your looking for.
hey man what's up I would go with the less restricted 40 series In past experiance you can drive it to a funeral or a fire it's all in the foot. if you know what I mean 3 inch in and 3 inch duell outlet if you want less noise in the cab single is louder. that is from my experiance and get a k@n filter while you out shopping go ahead treat your truck it desirves it
Sohow about just changing my existing stock muffler to a super 40 or 50series(single exhust)? Do you think this would help or not so much?

i just got the 40 series put on mine today. all they did was cut out the old muffler and weld in the new one. They left the resonator and existing pipe on and it sounds great. its not loud in the cab at all. even on the highway. it just sounds like it has a hemi in it now instead of a 6 cylinder. if you wanted it louder you could take off the resonator too. I was scared that the 40 series would be way too loud because of some of the coments i've read on here but I think if you leave the resonator on its perfect, anything quieter would be too quiet and pointless. it cost me $140 out the door and its welded not clamped.
guitarjrw,
Sounds like a plan, there is a muffler shop just down the road from me. Great guys who do quality workand reasonable too. I will be looking to pick up a Flowmaster super 40 for it but I do have one question. What size diameter inlet and outlet mufflerdid you get?
Thanks,

You may want to reconsider what you do to make the exhaust louder. The reason being that when the MDS kicks in, most feel the exhaust sounds like "crap." There are those who are not bothered by it....but a custom muffler shop that I have done business with for over 10 years, and whom I absolutely trust, says that he has done 8 exhaust modifications (louder sound) on '06 and '07 Hemi Rams, and every one has come back asking that the stock exhaust be reinstalled, because of the way it sounded when the MDS activated. Many on this forum have expressed a similar opinion.
