I have an HEMI/automatic/ 4x4 that has had a similar issue. My issue was the delay in going into rev more that drive.I had drove my truck 50+ milesand parked it at my work and it sat for a few hours (in 20 degree weather). When I left I started it up and put it in drive and it did like you stated, just that it did engage (hard) and when I drove awaythe trans light came on and it felt like I wasdriving in thick mud. I made an appointment with the dealership and when Istarted it upafter a couple of days the light went out and shifted fine all the way tothe appointment. The dealership could not find any codes or problems with the trans and told me to watch for this again and contact them if it happens again. Sorry this is not an answer to your question and more a"yep that seems to be happening tome" reply.
I had the same issue, but it would only occur about once a week. Last monday I drove to work just fine, but when I was leaving to go home the truck really started acting up. And normally I would shut it off then turn it back on and it would run fine. It didn't work this time. It was still drivable so I took it to the dealership. Well, after about a week of fighting with them to cover it under warranty. They finally did and it was the soleniod for the transmission. They didn't want to cover it because the 30,000 mile service was not done to it. I bought the truck with 31,000 miles from them. Wouldn't it be their responsibility to do that? They told me no.I've only had the truck for 6,000 miles. Hope you have better luck with the dealership than I did.
Well Holly the good news is it should still be under warranty. Even if you are over 36K miles your 7/70 will probably cover this.
Thank ya'll for your replies!! The truck has like ya'll stated done this a couple times before, where I would start the truck, and it was only the initial start of the day.... but start it put in reverse and it would hesitate backing up like i was trying to back up w/the ebrake on or something. I have got in the habit of ... lol starting the truck, then putting my daughter in her car seat, then getting in to leave, that way it had time to "warm" up, and it seemed to do just fine. It was not an all the time thing, and its really hard for me to get my truck to the dealership to deal w/"guys" from a lady stand point, and have to sit there w/a 2-3 yr old waiting. LOL But yesterday it wouldnt do anything. We checked tranny fluid and it was full and clean. The only thing that we could possibly think of would be the pump. But yah, lovely enough, my hubby has to work tomorrow when the shop is actually open, (nooooo they couldnt have been open when he was off Saturday, to take care of). So needless to say imma have to have it towed to the dealership tomorrow me and my daughter are going to have to go up there and deal with them by myself. And I hate it, cause I know a lot about cars, being a girl, and I can see them fkn me or attempting to, and I just dont even wanna deal with it LOL. I have 24 hr tow service covered under my 3/36 warranty, and so im NOT going to pay a dime to get it there. And my truck is still under the 3/36 war. as I bought it in may 05 brand new w/ like 5 miles on it, and it has 26k now. Sooooo Im NOT going to pay for any repairs, they will include everything under the warranty, or they will have the wrath of a ticked off MOM!!! LOL
soooooo.... lol anyone ever used the 3/36 24 hr tow service??

got it towed to dealer this am, after sitting on hold the first time with DC 24 hr tow for 50 min, then 25min the next, and then another hour and a half till the tow truck got to my house. But so the Service mgr calls mid day and says they are going to have to take my tranny out and tear it down and see what the problem is, says should be ready by end of the week. hmmmmmm???
