Default drive shaft fell off from the rear axle

yesterday my drive shaft came right off as i was going down the highway. What a ****ing joke! I have a 2002 dodge ram this should not be happening! Anyways call for a tow; even worse; the back axle wouldnt rotate forwards but only in reverse. The whole differential seized up; what the hell could that be from? A 1500 dollar repair bill though is headed my way. My truck was a lease before i got it but i bought it hwne it was 2 years old and had very little miles / kms on it. And of course the warrentry on it ran out a month ago.

What are the specifics on your truck? Antispin, what gears, did you have the diff serviced at the intervals in the manual? Also, if the diff service was done at a shop, could they have possibly forgot the LSD additive? There's lots of variables here, but the most prevalent cause of rear end damage is related to service or the lsd clip popping off and causing problems gumming up the gears. If you think it may have been a bad clip, be sure to report it to DCX, and also track down one of the many groups that are trying to get this item addressed as a serious issue. That was a dangerous situation having your rear end do that to you, and (assuming from your post) happy to hear nobody got hurt and you didn't get into an accident.

Wow ! That really sucks !! Is the rear-end dry ? (i.e. no gear lube in there ?)....that or perhaps something got out of alignment with the gear mesh etc..no good for sure. $1,500 seems kinda high for a repair though...

Screw a $1500 repair. Go get aheavy dutyrear-end from a salvage yard and swap it in.

BTW, welcome to the f%&$#*g drive-shaft club!

dont know much about anything; just letting you know that this is an issue that has happend. Im not a truck guy by any means; but yeah it was serviced once before i believe and it was on my to do list for my next service date in 2000kms (its 1500 dollars canadian mind you). i will have more info for you guys tommorrow as im to get it all back; ill be asking for full details and **** so i can rely them to possibly prevent this from happening to some other unlucky soul. With the repair though i get a warrenty on it though so thats good i guess?

AND YEAH very lucky to not be dead since i was going like 100 km/hr and it was rainging out; had i failed to pull over ...well yeah i'd be dead probably

Let this be a warning. Differential maintenance schedule is every 15K miles, which for most people is every 12-18 months. Remove cover/drain lube. Inspect housing for any metal shavings, reinstall cover and fill backup with lube.

$1500 to replace a carrier and gear set? I think that is the dealership or shop trying to screw you over! You can find a good rear-end shop that will put a whole new assembly in for @ $200. Then you just need to get the driveshaft fixed and your all set. Simple. I can remember the dealership telling me, when I had my camaro, that it would be $2000 to change my gears from 3.42 to 4.10 and they would whine constantly. I found a shop in maryland that put in 4.10 and they were whisper quiet. It cost me $175 to put the gears in.

Shop around man, its worth the effort.

Yeah, but if that is his only ride and needs it like today to move around. I know I would not have time to shop around. I would be screwed too. Altough, I am still under warranty.
That's the "crap" with Ram's, they are high maintenance "female dogs". Every 15,000 miles, give me a "sexual intercourse" break. I can do some things but rear diffs, thats a $200 job at the stealership so they can keep track that I do go every 15K.
Fords in the other hand, every 120,000 miles, oil change every 5,000 miles, tune-up every 80,000 miles. I guess they are built Ford tough. Dodges are built Cheap tough.
