Has anyone put a plow on a 1500? Looked in the owners manual and it says not to do it on a 1500 but the 2500 and up you can. Has anyone here put a plow on and had any problems. What are the cons against putting it on a 1500. I have a friend that is going to give me and install the whole setup for free but I do not know if I should put it on or not. I have never had a plow on atruck before and I do not want to tear up the truck if it is not designed for it.

 

#1, you will quickly wear out the front suspension
#2, over time the frame will bend or crack
#3, it is very hard on the tranny unless you put a fan on the cooler or get a larger tranny cooler

most of the 1/2 trucks I see sporting plows have had upgraded front suspensions to handle the weight of the plow.

 

I would definitely recommend against putting a plow on a stock 1500. The front suspension is not made to handle that weight. The only ram I would ever put a plow on would be the 2500 snow chief package. That package upgrades everything that would otherwise fail or be worn from use of a plow.

 

The Cv joints on a 1500 will never out live the solid axle on 2500 Ram depending on this distance and depth of snow, your basicly pulling the whieght of your truck against the whieght of your truck x how manny days/night's your working your truck.

 

I wouldn't do it. You're likely gonna jack the front end up all together.

 

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab Hemi SLT 4x4 with a plow package. I put on a 8 foot super duty BOSS straightblade plow, and have used it for two winters in Ohio. I can tell you that I believe a plow is extremely hard on a pickup. My truck was designed from the factory to have a plow on it, and I think my truck seems to be getting beat up more that you would think. I would advise against putting a plow on a 1500, even if it had an upgraded front suspension.

 

Thanks for the replies. I know any truck you put a plow on will tear your truck up faster. Thats a no brainer. I have owned a 1996 f150, 2000 dodge 1500, a 2003 chevy 1500hd, and now a 2006 dodge 1500. In no other owners manual has it said not to install a snow plow on a 1500 truck. I was hoping someone would know theEXACT reason why. I know several guys that have it on chevy 1500 with nosuspension upgradeswith no isues at all. I even know a guy that has had a heavy duty plow on a 1990 chevy S10 for 15 years and has had no problems. This is why I am curious why dodge does not want you to put one on a 2006 1500. I guess I should have stuck with a chevy truck

 

Well just in case anyone else is wondering, here it is straight from Dodge's website. This gives info on either snow plow prep groups. Putting a snow plow on a 1500 can be done, however it may not be the best decision depending on the type of plowing you would plan on doing. If it was for personal use and it was a light plow then it would not be as bad as plowing commercially with a large heavy plow. One thing I would definitely be aware of is the possibility for warranty grief down the road. As others have said, there are other suspension set-ups that are more suited for plowing but it is all up to you.

thanks. That is interesting that they list a package for it but the owners manual says do not do it. it also states the warranty will be voided. I have no plans on using a plow commercially, only for personal use maybe 2-3 times a year. The plow my friend wants to give me is a heavy duty that is about 500-600lbs. i think that will be to much for a 1500.I think I will just go buy a light duty one that is about 130lbs.. They only run about $1300. Thanks for all of your input
