Default 4.7 Tow Capacity

Thinking of getting a boat. What is a good weight (boat and trailer together) that the 4.7 can handle? I have a 2006 QC 4x2.

I had a 00 Dak. Quad Cab with the 4.7 and towed a 21 footer that weighed in at 4100 lbs. boat and trailer. Went up mountain grades pretty good with 3 adults and gear. Somtimes I would have to punch it to get it to 70mph to get over the top.

Check your owners manual. It also depends on what rear end you have. I have the 4.7 with the 3.92 LDS and it says I can tow 7400 pounds.

I have the 4.7L but i did the 4.56 swap, and it's also lifted.. It pulls my 21ft. Maxum boat with ease, it weighs 4100lbs. .. I also tow my 28ft Prowler (camping trailor), which weighs 6800lbs. fully loaded.. I keep it in overdrive most of the time, and drive the speed limit of 55 with a trailer here in CA. It does fine for the 10 or so camping trips a year pulling the trailor, the boat gets towed just about every weekend in the summer. Been doing it since 2003, truck has never let me down or missed a beat.. I am going to purchase a Superchips soon for the extra towing performance ...

I tow about 3000# (boat and trailer) with 5 adults with my stock 2000 D 4x4(no tow package). I put on a hiddenhitch and a trans cooler. If you do not have the tow package make sure you at least have a trans cooler. If you are going to pull a boat then that means it is hot outside - be sure to change the fluids in the trans, xsfer case and diff's on a regular basis.

What is the difference in a "towing package" versus having an install shop put on a class III hitch? Do I have to have a trans cooler?

7400 is gooseneck weight. Bumper/receiver is 500/5000 unless you have a class 4 hitch.

I do not remember everything that was in towing package, whichrequired the HD package (if anyone can add to this, please do), but it included the hitch (obviously), 7-wire connector, higher capacity battery and alternator, HD cooling (larger radiator/trans cooler) and an option for a 3.92 gear. For the $50 that it cost, I would not hesitate toadd an addtional trans cooler. I mounted mine on the outside of the condenser so that I get maximum air flow thru it, took about an hour start to finish. I did put rotors/ceramics on the front as well.

If your truck didnt come with the tow package, then no you most likely don't have a trans cooler.

I disagree. I did not get the tow package, no 7 pin or receiver, but I got the factory 3.92's, upgraded batterty and alternator and tranny cooler. I also think I have an oil cooler but don't hold me to that. Truck is in the shop and I can't go outside andbe sure. I'm thinking there are two coolers in front of the radiator with the ac condenser set to the side by itself.
