Default Welding precautions?

It's time to ditch the stock muffler. I've heard horror stories about welding on vehicles with computers. Is there anything I should do other than disconect the battery? I'm not going to do a whole lot since it's so close to the gas tank, but I'll need to tack some stuff together while I'm fabbing. I think I'll start with just a straight pipe, no muffler and see how it sounds. I don't mind loud, but I hate the redneck dual straight pipe cackeling exhaust sound.

i dont know whether or not it will hurt the computer, but im sure the gas tank would be fine for just doing a little bit of welding near it, depending on how far away from the tank it is. i would just be sure that you could do it good before you got started on the project. im a pretty damn good welder, and i would be really hesitant about welding on my exhuast system. what are you gonna be using to weld it with? stick, mig, or heliarc?

You might consider disconnecting the computer, passenger side firewall, after you disconnect the battery and turn the headlights on for a few minutes. Make sure the vehicle is sitting on the rubber tires and not grounded in any way, and make sure you are positively grounded for the welder to the exhaust system in the area you are welding on. in other words, don't get an exhaust donut or gasket in between where you are welding and the piece you are welding on.
This will reset everything and the computer will have to relearn your driving habits, but better than possibly cooking the FCM. You would want to reset the FCM anyway so it can relearn your system with the new exhaust. Don't forget the O2 sensors, and be careful around the wires for the O2 sensors.

Don't worry about it. Done a bunch of welding on my truck and the pcm is fine. No battery/pcm disconnects.
