For one, they wont look good if you are looking for a cheap one. Usually they stick up quite a few inchs off the bed, and end up looking like a hunch back.

Here are a few that dont look like a hunch back, but are hard covers.

I recommend a soft cover mainly because they are easily removable by just rolling it back, plus they are a lot cheaper than hard ones, only about $100 at your local auto parts store. Currently on my Ram, I dont have any cover, and really dont see why I would want one, but I suppose that deals with how you use the bed.

I would also like to have a "solid" tonneau cover. If you want to put something in the bed, take it off !!! Its extremely easy, at least for the last one I had, and it turns the bed into a lockable 6' trunk. I hardly haul anything in the bed anyway, so for my purposes, it is beneficial.

I have shopped ********, Lund, and a few others but basically need a fiberglass shell with locks. Cant see why that costs $1100.

an unusual tonneau option that can also fold outward to make high sideboards or a rack:

tonneau with a " RES " or roofline extension spoiler that might help MPG a bit more than a regular tonneau:

a 'hard' tonneau that comes off and folds similar to a soft one:

hard/soft combination cover

aluminum but 'fiberglass like' rear raising tonneau

I agree with everything you said here. I don't use my bed that often and when I do, I can easily take the tonneau off and when I have it on... it is a 6' trunk! lol. I like that thought of the trunk. lol. And holy crap! I can't see why that stuff is over $1000 either!
