Yes, but you get the added traction that the 2wd doesn't have. So your launches will be better.

Now, I will try using a pump up sprayer with rubbing alcohol to cool the engine and radiator down, because that can't cool anything much below ambient temperature. It's really just a time saver by reducing the wait for cooldown between runs.
I understand. You want a stock truck 1/4 time that it can run anywhere, anytime without doing anything.

This is true. When the pavement is wet and I'm in 4x4 I get as good a launch as when its dry. I wonder though, with dry pavement, after the gains of a better launch are realized, do the parasitics of the extra drive train come into play as a penalty? Would it be better to use 4x4 high to get going then switch it back off at some point? Something more for me to experiment with

To answer the question about shifting, you can't shift at any higher rpm than the truck will do by itself. The gain comes from getting access to 2nd prime when you shift manually. According to my tach, it shifts at 5600 rpm at wide open throttle. Doing it manually, you need to command the shift at about 5400 or 5450 to give it time to react. If you wait too late it hits the rev limiter until the shift happens, which slows you down.

yeah all the gears you need to shift a couple hundred RPM's before you need to so the transmission has time to react

I know muscle car guys that used to do it and said it helped. I think you could get a 10th or so, but not much more.

Its about the temp at launch--and yes, in these big V8s it makes a huge difference.

Thats why just about every body out there with a GTO or and srt or 5.7 hemi that drags it, has a 180 degree thermo, and either a modification or a tune to turn on the fan earlier at lower temp.

theys say for every 10 degrees over 190ish you are---thats a loss of ten HP. Don't laugh-I have launched my charger srt8 at 200 degrees and got a 1.92 60 ft. time and only ran 13.0. Cool off the car, including ice on the intake, get a 2.1 60 ft time and run a 12.8 cuz the car launched at 175 degrees. Makes a huge difference.

You got .2, I guessed at .1. I knew it made a difference, but never tested it.
