Horrible trade-in value for 2010 Ram!
I was thinking about buying a 2011 sport model and went to a local Dodge dealership to see where my current truck stood in terms of trade-in value, and WHAM- a whopping $20k!! WTH??? (My truck's MSRP was over $42k btw). I understand about depreciation, but this is ridiculous. It looks like I'll have to try and sell it privately...
I'm just curious if any of you have tried to trade-in your 2010 and what value did you get?

What did you honestly expect to get for it? They are discounting NEW trucks that list for $40K + down to under $30k. How much do you think they can give you for yours and turn around and resell it as used and turn a profit?
It's depreciation, yeah, but it's also the fact that they over value retail and sell for $12-14k under that value off the lot. Your $42k MSRP truck was more realistically a $30k truck when you walked in to buy it.
I just had this same conversation a couple of weeks ago with this chick that I go out with from time to time. She wants 100% KBB Full Retail for her '07 car and wants them to discount the new 2010 she's looking at by $15k. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. You buy for retail, they can give you around retail for trade. You wanna discount down to wholesale for new, you are gonna get wholesale AT BEST for your trade.
Yep, private sale is gonna be your best bet, but remember if you price it too high, people can walk in and buy new for under $30k AND get great finance rates as well...

I got a cousin in NY bought a brand new '08 QCSB Hemi 4x4 for $22,000 when the 4th Gens first started hitting the lots, so giving $25k for a used one, two years later in trade is about $7-8k out of line.
Sure the OP can get $30k for trade on his '10, IF he's willing to pay full sticker on the truck to replace it with...
I have a 2010 Laramie 4x4 crew cab (45K or whatever list) with 12K miles on it. They were going to give me 29K towards a BMW, they had a dodge dealer on the speaker phone that said they can sell a brand new 2010 like mine for 34-35K, I paid 36 for it almost a year ago.
I thought 29K was fair considering I was getting the BMW for 5% under sticker (thats pretty good for a 2011 BMW), but I ended up keeping it because its been a good truck and it will be hard to replace for 29K. 20 seems pretty low, I would shop around a bit or just keep what you have.
You cant use list price for reference these days with Dodges since they have been giving them away new last couple years, I feel bad for people who paid nearly list price for them, its going to be a big surprise come trade-in time.

Long story as to why, but I traded my 09 Laramie for a 10 Laramie earlier this year and got 27 for it (paid 32). Next day I bought it back, only cost me $400 for their trouble.

Yeah, but the question here is, what did you pay for what you traded your '08 for? Because that's big time over valuing your '08, and the only way to make that back is on what they sold you.

It could just be a locational difference when it comes to pricing/trade-in.
