Default What winter tires are you running?

I just brought my 2011 Ram 1500 Sport QuadCab home last week and now I'm looking at getting some winter tires & rims for it. So what winter tires are you running if any and how do you like them? What kind of winter conditions do you have? I live in northern BC so obviously our winters can be a little extreme at times so I need a good performer in snow & ice, as well as solid on the highway & quiet. So chime in if you have any experience and let me know what you're running!

I ran last winter on the stock goodyears and had no problems getting through 12 to 18 inch drifts and they were better than I thought they would be on ice also. I know that goodyear wrangler at/s tires do very well on snow and ice also, and are quiet.

I ran the ATS on my Jeep Cherokee in upstate NY a few years back and they did great in the snow. However that is a completley different vehicle. I have heard the Goodyear Silent Armor tires are fantastic in the snow. They have a 10 rating in snow and carry the snowflake symbol which I guess means something to Goodyear. I plan on putting them on my wives Commander when her Fotera tires are done. I priced the Silent armors for our size tire before I got my BFG's and if I remember they where around 1100 installed with the road hazard.

For pavement use in hard packed snow and ice you want a tire with small voids (spaces between the individual blocks) and as much siping (the small cuts in each block) as you can get. The last thing you want is a Mud Terrain tire.

The small voids means there is more tread to make surface contact and the siping adds flexibility and grip in each individual block.

True "snow tires" like the Blizzak work very well as do many A/T tires with the above mentioned characteristics. Nitto Terra Grapplers, Firestone Destination A/Ts and a few others come to mind as very good tires in hard packed snow and ice, as well as very good wet pavement traction, all while giving a very smooth and quiet ride...

I had a set of the Goodyear SilentArmor tires on my old Toyota Tacoma 4x4 and they were pretty good as an all-season tire. I didn't like them much for snow and ice though. They slipped out pretty easily when starting from a stop on ice. That might have been due to my Tacoma being so light however. Even though they have the mountain snowflake symbol I don't consider them a true winter tire, they're more of an all-season tire. Same with the Nitto Terra Grapplers & Firestone Destination A/Ts.

I was looking at the Continental 4x4 WinterContacts, Michelin X-Ice2 & Nokian Hakkapellita R so far. These are a true winter tire I believe and should be miles ahead of the stock Wranglers that came on my truck in winter performance.

I run Blizzak DM-V1. Not bad at all . Sometimes I forget that this is a winter. Didn't try deep snow yet.

Wow Slava, whats all that white stuff on the ground?

I live in the So Cal desert and run BFG AT's year around. I know I live in a whole different world as far as winters are concerned, but these seem to work pretty well when I travel to other parts of the west in the winter for hunts, etc.

I ended up with the Blizzak DM-V1's as well. I put 2000km on them over the holidays and so far so good. Stopping distance on ice and compact snow are top notch.
