my recent trip to Ohio
Hey guys. Just took my new 2011 ram 1500 sport 4x4 to a trip from detroit to eastern ohio, and thought I would share with you how it went. My truck is equipped with 20" rims, stock everything, 3.55 gears, regular cab, short box.
First off, when I left, I had roughly 940 miles on my truck. It is a 230 or so mile drive from start to finish. I fueled up my truck the night before, (thurs) and drove out around one oclock on friday afternoon. I reset my fuel guage before I left, and before I came back as well. For the ride down, it was about 50 degrees, and rained 90% of the time. tire pressure was even at 43psi all the way around. I did roughly the speed limit all the way there (which ranged from 50,60,65, and 70) with no more than 5mph over. I averaged, all highway mind you, 17.7mpg on the trip down.
For the return trip, which was all the same freeways, I had 55 degree weather, tire pressure stayed the same at 43psi, and it only rained about 20-30% of the time. which made it much nicer. the speed limits stayed the same. on the return trip, i averaged 19.8mpg.
Not sure why the increase for the return trip, other than rain, and possibly wind direction.
These figures are purely based off of the EVIC. I did not do any math by hand. But if it is anything close to what the EVIC showed, I will be happy.
I tried to gather as much information for both the trip down and the return trip to make this as accurate as possible. I decided to post this thread based on a recent post about the possibilities of actually achieving the stated 20mpg highway.
Hope this will help someone out.
Rich.

I don't know if I trust the EVIC MPG ticker. I try to reset mine for trips all the time and it goes blank, but then shoots right back to what it had just read. I've never seen it read anything other than 17.X mpg. I've done the math by hand and gotten up in the 18 mpg range, but the evic has never gone up. Damn thing's probably broke.
elevation change were you driving a little more uphil one way vs the other? i know my mpg is always a bit lower in the rain, if your using your defroster dont forget that your AC is cycling.
tdtipmo ... when i reset my mpg it starts where it left off but then it definitely starts to adjust to current driving style. my travels from about 10mpg to 20+mpg depending on what i am doing and whether i am towing or not. i am sure its not perfect but when i have checked it it has been relatively close.
