They aren't holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy the thing. If the price or any fees are more than you think is fair, tell them to lower or waive them or you are walking. Simple as that...

The last used vehicle I bought off of a dealer lot had a $500 "used car fee" that was in the contract when I went to sign. NEVER was discussed but was simply just added when I went to sign the contract. I told them I wasn't paying it. They countered by saying they couldn't do the deal then because they negotiated my price counting the $500 fee, so they claimed without it, they were taking a loss on the vehicle.
I got up to leave, after muttering an expletive or two and all of a sudden they changed their tune. Gave me the song and dance on how they "won't do this for anyone else" and the "don't tell anyone we are doing this" crap, but they waived the fee...

first off the credit card deposit is something I never agree to, they ask for it, I say "no, I won't put a deposit", then they don't bother asking again

before you make a purchase you have all the power, once you sign on the dotted line your negotiating position is drastically different

also, whenever a salesman gives me a price, I always counter with "I want a final price with all extras included, because that price you give me that I agree to is the total I will pay, not a dollar more for etching or anything, so work your numbers and give me the total with taxes and all in"

they will try to sell you insurance and extended warranty after, but that is all optional and that is fine

Comparison:

2011 Dodge Quad Cab - Big Horn - $37,605 CDN MSRP (Sherwood Park Dodge Alberta)

Granted they are not the exact same VIN, but the same truck for the most part. As you can see, the price is the same, regardless if it's the USA or Canada. This is quite a surprise to me as well. Only the USA dealer had a 'instant' discount advertised of $4300. If you are an individual, you would likely spend any saving on transportation, import/export brokerage as well as standardizing it to Canadian standards (speedo/odometer/DRLs).

So, I agree, there's no way that is worthwhile to go to the USA for a vehicle. I am curious what the discounts are on the Canadian vehicles.
Unless you have a US address or had a US address and are moving to Canada, importing a vehicle from the US voids the entire warranty, powertrain, bumper to bumper, emissions, rust thru etc.

I'd want to see case law on that. They kept threatening that for CDN trucks in the USA. It got squashed in US court.

Dealership fees are a rip off.
And I love how the double dip on the a/c tax.
It is included in the msrp already. It would be the same as giving you a price on the vehicle and then saying that we have to charge you extra for the windshield.
Anything for a buck with these guys.

I can say too buying a truck in canada is expensive, the only reason why I buy new is because I get an air canada deal. Which in turn is employee pricing, and on top of that air canada bonus cash. Could be anywhere from 100 bucks to 7 grand, ON TOP of the savings from employee pricing. Anyways I am trying to get financed for a new 2012 3500 laramie cummins. With the deals that went on in the previous month the MRSP of this truck was 75,345 with the deal I get it has dropped that price down to just over 50 grand! So I was totally down for financing this vehicle so I told him to put it through...well...

He came back to me saying I am not approved because the total new loan is 80 grand. I asked him how that came to be, well they are only giving me 25 grand for my trade, 2011 sport QC 30k kms, I still owe 30 grand on it. Thats a difference of around 5 grand , so they add that to the price of the new loan which brings the total up to around 55 grand. I asked how they had come up with a price of 80 grand on the new loan, I found out that the 7 grand! (I know!) I paid for life and disability on the previous loan I am not receiving a full refund for. Only around 2 grand. So they added another 5 grand, bringing the total loan to 60 grand. Then they wanted to add another 20 grand!!! for the new life and disability. This almost DOUBLES my payments every two weeks.

I never agreed to that, dealer just said "well its a standard rate" Based on your age, time at your job, and the total of the loan thats just what it is....Man was I hacked! So I phoned my insurance company to see if I could get the same coverage through them, they came back to me with a price of 50 bucks PER MONTH covered up to 100grand. Phoned the dealer back told them to take that 20 grand off for L&D, he fought hard to keep it on, but eventually got rid of it. Still can't seem to get approved, but fighting hard. It probably again is an age thing :P

From the previous truck I figured that L&D was going to be high, but I was told I was re-embersed for the full amount, thats not the case. I learned from my mistakes on that trade to pay attention to the money amounts, but I thought that would be fixed on the next trade, boy was I wrong! But how can a dealer add that stuff on that clearly milks you for all you have? And 20 grand worth!

Sorry for my little rant guys, but I agree with the whole dealer out for your pocketbook thing. Check your forms carefully, before signing the dotted line, check everything!

But glad it worked out for you, I have never even heard of windshield etching...

'roadside' and 'glass etching'. They sound like optional services so tell them you don't want them. If they weren't on the sticker (i.e. a factory option or an add-on that was already on the vehicle before you started looking at it) then simply don't buy them. If the dealer gives you problems just leave. They'll get the point.

BTW, what is 'AC tax'? Some govt fee because the vehicle has an air conditioning system? Bureaucracy!

AC tax is a federal tax introduced back in the 70s to discourage purchasing cars with AC since they used more fuel. That's all I'm going to say about that because I can feel my BP rising already.
