Default 40 Series Flowmasters on 2012 1500

Hey All,

My first post on here, I'm new to the Ram thing, but love it so far. I bought this truck with the 5.7 Hemi with the intent to make a few mods. I knew I wanted to slap some Flowmasters on it, but wan't sure if I wanted to order a system or just have one installed locally. I also wasn't sure which series Flowmaster I wanted.

The full stainless catback system with a 50-HD series Flowmaster goes for just under $550 and then you install it yourself or pay someone else to do it. The 2012's come with the fake factory dual exhaust, so I decided I would see how much it would cost locally to just swap mufflers. Went to Meineke and got a quote with a 40 series muffle (40 series is the louder of the bunch with 2 chambers inside the muffler) for $241. Pretty cheap, but I was a little concerned about it being too loud, which I did not want. After talking to the exhaust tech, I decided to go with the 40 series. WOW, I'm glad I did, it really woke up the Hemi sound, and its the perfect decibel level. Pretty tame when you don't have your foot in it, but comes to life when you hit the gas.

The only part of the exhaust that was removed was the muffler and then they had to make some extension pipes to fit the Flowmaster because it's considerably smaller than the stock muffler. The only down side is the extension pipes are aluminzed and not stainless, so I bought some very high temp header paint to paint the welds and the extension pipes to prevent corrosion. I work 500 meters from the ocean, so corrosion is a big problem for me.

Anyways it was the best $250 I've spent in a long time. Also installed a AEM cold air intake and I hope to get maybe 1 MPG out of the set-up, but we'll see.

So, if you were wanting the Flowmaster sound, but were worried that the 40 series muffler would be too loud, in my opinion its absolutely perfect, not too loud, not too quite.

Scott

Exhaust pipes rust from the inside out - spraying paint on the pipes and welds isn't going to do anything, even if the paint did stay on.

Scott welcome to the forum!

Well glad to hear you got your muffler put on and your happy with it! I don't know where you live but $241 is really pricey to have them cut the old muffler out and just swap it....should of done some more searching. Also post a pic of your truck!!

I went to a custom exhaust shop (in NJ not the cheapest state in the US, can't wait for work to transfer me out of this state haha) and I paid 200 (plus $20 tip) for a maggy muffler, two new exhaust tips w/ cutting the resonators out...or maybe I got a hell of a deal? I don't know but it was worth it...till I get the Maggy Cat Back system w/ 5" double walled tips!!

Looks like lxman didn't wan't to **** in your cornflakes, so I will. LOL...

The chambered design sounds real good. I had a Flowmaster 50HD for about two years before it turned to swiss cheese (no salted roads here in the south, either). Performance also lacked according to the dyno, them chambers are great for rumble but suck ***** for exhaust flow.

Start putting aside a little $ each month now to replace it in a year or so when it rusts on you.

Hmm, OK well I feel stupid now. Hammer did you actually put your truck on the dyno before and after the FM mod? If so I am very interested in seeing the numbers you got.

oldjeep, good point about the rust from the inside, I didn't think about that.

Guess maybe I should have left it stock, but I guess I'll have to try to enjoy the sound for a couple of years until it rusts out.

Yeah, I used to "hang out" at a performance shop, that recently sold. I used to dyno the truck after just about all mods, small and large. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I lost about 4 RWHP after the FM install, nothing major, but still a loss. I had a bunch of dynos saved, not just my truck but a lot of builds they did there but I lost them when I lost the hard drive on my old laptop.

I used to drink the kool-aid too, my FM50HD was one of my first mods, couldn't wait to hear that classic Flowmaster sound, but I learned, as did many on here.
They do sound GREAT, except for a drone in the cab I had from about 1600-2200 rpm, but they really are quite restrictive and unless you shell out big $ for the stainless, they don't last too long.

I ended up replacing it with a Cherry Bomb Extreme, better sound I think, and more importantly, better flow.

I have a chart of some of the more popular mufflers and their respective flow rates in the 3rd Gen FAQ section:

I would say your fine with the life of a flowmaster. I've been running one on my jeep for 7 years in Michigan, where they salt like crazy. Its not rusted at all, just smashed from banging it on rocks. I will agree though, it probably flows less than the stock muffler does.
