Hey guys...

New member here and I did some searching but didn't really find the answer I was looking for.

First off, I have a 2009 Quad Cab with the Hemi and it is a 4X4. I love the truck and the way it drives in town and on long trips to the desert or mountains. Suspension and wheels and tires are stock for now but I have messed around with some gizmos for the motor. Have the aFe air intake and throttle body and an Edge programmer. So far they are great investments since my last road trip got me 23.8 mpg!

Now to my question. I want to upgrade the exhaust, but I do not want to spend the coin for the full cat back system. Doing a little research it turns out the stock flows pretty good (this is from reading your posts) so I just want to replace the muffler with a Magnaflow. I want to get the larger size (24in?) to keep the noise down, and I want to leave the resonators on to make sure I don't get the drone. I have the single outlet exhaust that exits on the passenger side, and want to leave it this way. What size tubing do I have? Is it 3" in and 3" out?

The 24 would be the least aggressive in terms of noise. Drone is a very subjective measurement. No different than some can hear ticks and creeks and the next person cannot. Anytime you change the muffler to something louder cabin noise will increase and person a to say it is not bad, person b will say the opposite. Your best bet is to find local people who have done it. Your next best bet is to find YouTube clips.

 

Yes, everything is pretty much subjective, especially when it comes to noise. I love the sound of my 1974 blazer with a 502 BBC and 642hp, but I am pretty sure the old lady next to me at the stoplight does not like it! I just want to get the Magnaflow so it actually sounds a little like a truck, instead of a station wagon. Was hoping someone could tell me the size of the tubing today, so I can order it up. I am at work and don't feel like crawling under the truck in my work clothes

 

24" will certainly keep the noise down. Stock muffler is huge on these trucks. I have no resonators with an 18" oval bodied Magnaflow and it's perfect for the average guy who wants to stay toned down. I can hear it when the radio is down, but it doesn't drown the radio out when I do have it on(even with windows down and getting on it) I have never had one old man tell me he didn't like it or thought it was obnoxious. With that said, I wish it was a 14" to be slightly louder.
As far as drone. It's gonna happen some. The whole purpose of the manufacturer is to keep the rise pleasant and interior noise to a minimal. Anytime you change factory exhaust, your going to get mild resonance at the minimum. Now, my 18" Mag is very quiet in the resonance department and I am thankful for that. It was MDS that was the biggest noise ordinance in my book. Most aftermarket mufflers enhance and make a notable change in the tone of MDS.

I think that even though you don't want drone, you'll still be happy with the trade-off by going to a say...20" oval bodied muffler since you'll be keeping the resonators on, they will keep the muffler toned down to a low note. Stay away from bullet style mufflers. Magnaflow oval bodied is what you want. I have owned many of both styles. I think that the MDS is what may bother you in the end. While you dont even notice the mds activation now, it'll be very apparent with an aftermarket exhaust.

Yes on the 3" and stock exhaust is T409 stainless so you'll want to get a muffler thats the same. Magnaflow is just that.


btw..that throttlebody spacer is a paperweight. It does nothing for non-carb vehicles. Your gains are from your CAI and programmer only. Maybe sell it and use that coin towards your muffler.

I was looking at the oval body muffler already so got that part taken care of Looks like you have an 08 year...since you mentioned that the 3" is the correct size, you are sure that it is the same for the 09's? Just want to make sure. I guess I should just get under the truck and measure what the stock muffler is then get the same size to match, that way nothing much changes? I'm sure I will get some drone, just don't want it to get out of control and ruin a long trip.

I understand your point on the spacer. I called aFe and talked to them, they mentioned I will see zero gains driving around town and stop and go use, and that I might see some gains when on the freeway as far as gas mileage goes. It was only $80 so no biggie. I will use it for a month (only had it in one week) then take it out and see if I notice anything.

 

i have seen some reccomended part numbers in older posts, but i dont know that they are correct. if you look at the pictures on mufflex website i believe it should be offset offset.

Didn't all Hemi equipped units come with factory dual exhaust in 09, I know the 4.7 is single outlet that exits at the right rear wheel.have never seen a Hemi with single outlet.

 

Last i checked, (09-up 4th gen duals) muffler is 3inch inlet, 2-1/2 outlet.
The single exhaust trucks may be a different size. Crawl under it an check yours to be sure.

 

Thanks guys...I will crawl under and check everything to be sure and then let everyone know the part numbers and so forth. I got my truck used with 7200 miles on it (17,450 now), and it when it was ordered by the previous guy he checked the box for the single side exhaust.

 

i went with a single in dual out super 44 and it sounds f*kin awesome, very quiet on the interstate, no regrets.
