electric cooling fans
Hey guys, has any of you looked into an electric cooling fan conversion kit for the newer Rams? I suspect the power gains would be good,as well as the torque.i know that they come with one from the factory, but is it enough just to run it alone? If so why did they keep the mechanical fan?

According the the Mustang Dyno, I free'd up 14 HP and 11 TQ at the rear wheels when I went to an efan, almost all in the lower-mid RPM range, although peak numbers didn't really change (I'm sure do to the fact that once RPMs get up high enough - the engine is making enough power to overcome the parasitic draw of the clutch fan).
In-town fuel economy is a pretty consistent 1.5 gain, but highway is pretty much the same, again I'd say because at cruising speed, the clutch fan drain isn't felt like it is at initial launch.
The largest advantage for me, is I do a lot of work around my farm property/hunt and fish in the south Georgia heat where you pretty much drive at idle to maybe 5 mph. Clutch fan just isn't pulling enough CFM to keep the engine cool, especially if I'm pulling a trailer with 7000 lbs. of Kubota tractor on it. My efan pulls a constant 3300 even if I'm sitting still at idle...

in tune with Hammer, the highway miles won't increase at all- the clutch fan is usually disengaged at highway speeds anyway as enough air is forced through the rad at above 35mph to handle cooling..
off the line power is absolutely noticeable- especially if you tow/haul.. the bump is precisely where you need it, which is just above idle.. the engine catches it's curve around 1500~2000rpm, and starts producing good gogo at that point.. below, however, every little pop in power you can find is good.. the efan delivers there..
i did it for none of these reasons, because i didn't even know about them yet- i would have had i known though.. the reason i did it was to effectively cool while backing a particular boat up a long drive into a barn, and through sand and loose traction.. we're talking 2~2500 RPM in reverse for five minutes.. no flow across the rad w/ oe clutch fan.. I came close to overheating several times.. I haven't since..
it's a good mod..

Yup,I was surprised that it is was there too.Thats a good question,I'm thinking its comes on for the a/c.I think its really worth looking into, especially with the price of gas these days.I've heard that a tuner can adjust the fan set points,or even the dealer can do it.

When I came from work today,i stopped in the yard and started if 5 min later and was about to go when i heard the elec fan came on.I checked and the aircon was NOT on.
So the Elec fan in our trucks does help with cooling, just dont know if it can be the only cooling fan on the truck
