Default Man Hole

FYI:

I hit a man hole, without a cover on the weekend...

Mangled my rim and tire... I installed the spare and drove it home, only to find, to go straight my steering wheel was upside down... Insurance towed to to the shop from home, they did an 'alignment' test on it. The front end is perfect and straight, I didn't believe it...

Come to find out, the rear axle on one said had twisted, and was toed out about 14 degrees!?!?!? I don't understand how it still rolled...

Anyway, as of now, the update is, a whole new rear axle assembly is on it's way to be installed in the truck, and new tire and rim. Cost is about $6200....

I hope no body else has to deal with that, pain in the butt!

Thank goodness for insurance! I rarely head into the city, but now and then I hear on the evening news stories regarding theft of manhole covers, which are pawned off at scrape metal refineries for melting.

How many brain cells does it take to realize DPW's city property being traded for cash at a metal recycle center from a private party would seem awkward?!? Anything for a buck these days!

Hopefully your truck is back up and running soon!

I wish it was from theft, but, it was from high volume of rain, that pushed the cover off... I couldn't see it, cuz it was under a 'puddle'

Wow! That sucks! Make sure to have your shop or dealer check everything that could possibly be damaged so that insurance takes care of it all.

This is one of the horrors I would hate to encounter on a motorcycle.

Wow, that sucks. Sorry to hear, but hopefully it gets fixed quick.

Just be thankful you were in a truck. I saw a dude in a minivan hit a manhole without the cover. It was the same deal as yours where a lot of rain had floated it out and down the street a good 20 feet. Unfortunately the minivan guy didn't drive his vehicle off anywhere. He was doing probably 40 or 45 and the front wheel dove into the manhole and stopped, but the vehicle kept moving. It ripped the front wheel off and I imagine a good bit of the control arms, etc and just shoved everything up into the passenger door, which it ripped off the hinges and fell into the street and floated down near the manhole cover.

Hey all, that youtube video is INTENSE!!!... Definitely glad that didin't happen.

I have a picture of my rim, because, at first, that appeared to be the only damage, until I drove it.

Sounds like they are replacing all rear control arms, springs, shocks, and complete rear axle assembly, apparently a lot was bent.

I also have a picture of the car that was damaged by the cover that launched...

I'm fine, and it just felt like and intense bump, thought that I had hit a chunk of metal that just blew out my tire... Not the case obviously...

Fixing it right the first time would be the hope, and I was just going to put it up for sale the day after it happened... Not the way I wanted my weekend, or week to go. Not to mention the nightmare I have had with rentals, on my fourth rental now...

String of bad luck, oh well, carry on.

Here's hopin it never happens to you guys... NOT FUN!

Thanks for all the support.

It may be that the water covering the hole helped you avoid a situation like the one in the video. Some type of limited hydroplaning effect kept the wheel from dipping deep enough into the hole to result in what the video shows. Or it could be that the tires on the RAM are just big enough compared to the hole diameter. In any event it is great that you didn't have an accident from it.

Just remember, next time it's raining drive REALLY fast and you'll hydroplane right over that hole!
