Thanks for the information. I'll have to check underneath my truck again just incase, I did the rear diff a month ago, everything looked solid, or at least nothing out of the ordinary. I know I have an early '09, but not sure as to the presumed month labeled on the door.

I knew it would be a matter of time before the NHTSA would get involved, ther are ALOT of 4th gen trucks out there running around with BAD differentials, and the biggest issue is, alot of people dont even know the difference between a shopping cart and the plastic bag the groceries go in, so they dont even suspect the bad issue is coming. So with saying it like that, someone unaware, BOOM goes the rear end, possible accident...LAWSUIT`S up the wahzoo...!!!!

Mine had a whine, and my dealer quickly replaced all the internals of the rear end. It's been great now for over 14K miles since the rebuild.
Find a different dealer, one that wants to make money doing warranty work.

That is a little worriesome to say the least! Is the pinion nut on the outside of the rear diff so i can take a look at it or is it inside?

The pinion nut is behind the yoke on the drive shaft. You would have to drop the drive shaft/yoke to gain access to the pinion nut inside the pinion flange.

One other question, from what i have been reading it sounds like you will start to hear noises coming from the rear end before it breaks right? If that is the case at least i would have some of a warning first, correct?

Stunna -
Not at 55+ miles per hour. It will cause an accident, none the less.
I have an 09 (not sure early or late) and I am about to change my rear diff fluid and cover. Just purchased a Mag-Hytech 12 Bolt 9.25 cover and Amsoil oil.

Typically you'll hear whining. If the pinion nut backs out away from the crush sleeve you'll start losing pre-load, which I believe will cause the pinion shaft to change its angle on the ring gear during acceleration, resulting a noise as some refer as a whining sound. I could be wrong, but it seems logical.

The problem with inspecting a pinion nut that maybe problematic is actually knowing how far the nut may have moved. You can't just tighten up the pinion nut so it feels snug, and add additional pre-load. Once you add to much pre-load the pinion crush sleeve is pretty ruined, backing the nut off at this point will equal no pre-load.
