Default RAM 1500 Trucks Under Investigation

Many of you, including myself, have had the problem with the rear differential locking up when driving due to the pinion bolt coming loose also causing the driveshaft to break.

Apparently, the NHTSA has had about 12 complaints of this happening and I know there have been more because I also submitted a complaint this morning after reading this:
http://www.torquenews.com/106/dodge-...ntial-failures

So, if you have had this problem or have friends with RAM's who's rear diff has failed go to the NHTSA website and file a complaint. This may help booster the recall position of Dodge. But, probably not...

I've had the same issue and filed a complaint too, even though mine is a 2008 model and outside the current scope of the investigation. I hope they do expand the search some.

I have not had any issues either. This is the best vehicle I have ever had. I wonder if it is the 3.92 limited slip. I think the 3.55 are one leggers.

Had my "one legger" 3.55 replaced at the dealer.

There's 2 different complaints posted in this Thread. 2008-older and even newer suffer from Clutchpack retaining issue's binding up the rear end causing major failure.

The pinion bolt is a completely different part located within the rearend.

I haven't had the retaining issue on my 2008. I had the pinion nut come loose on my truck as I was driving down the highway. So for me and my 2008, it is the same issue as the 09-10 MY, the pinion nut coming loose.

Just curious, and haven't done much extensive lurking around...
what's the difference between the '09-'10 models rearend, and the '11-current models? Where they aware of the situation, and improved certain aspects that needed revising?

The 2011 diff`s are still made by the same vendor/company, it is alot different internally (ZF manufacturing) , this was a updated differential for the 2011 1500 trucks. The 2011 also had somewhat of a recall already, BUT, 2009 & 2010 did not fall under chryslers so-called recall.

If my source`s are correct, mid year 2009 on back, have AAM differentials, and from mid yr 09 on up into 2010,11,12,13, the 1/2 ton trucks, differentials are now made/manufactured by ZF in georgia.

My 2010 howel`s like a banshee.... 2 dealers tell me to wait for it to break and THEN bring it in to be fixed... thats just UNACCEPTABLE...! I am one of those person`s that had sent in a written complaint to the NHTSA, so we`ll see what happens from here. I knew it would be a matter of time before the NHTSA would get involved, ther are ALOT of 4th gen trucks out there running around with BAD differentials, and the biggest issue is, alot of people dont even know the difference between a shopping cart and the plastic bag the groceries go in, so they dont even suspect the bad issue is coming. So with saying it like that, someone unaware, BOOM goes the rear end, possible accident...LAWSUIT`S up the wahzoo...!!!!

Thank you chrysler, now the goverment has to step in for something you wouldnt own up to...!!!
