Default DIY Oil Catch Can

I've been looking around a lot for catch cans and came across a DIY concept and decided to go for it. I did it for about $40, I figure I'll spend the money on a billet down the road, I just wanted something in place before I put any more oil in the intake.

Can Assembly: HUSKY HDA70603AV - Air Compressor Filter
Mounting: P-Clamp, Bolt/Washer/Spacer into Head
Misc: Barbed Brass Fittings, Braided Rubber Hose

Time: Once I figured out all the parts I needed - 20-30min
Difficulty:Low

After installation, I did a SeaFoam Smoke Show (Half Can) and SeaFoam in the Gas Tank

Results: Too early to tell but I assume I will see similar results as other setups

I realize its smaller than the billet catch cans and I'll probably have to empty it more often but I can always upgrade later. Overall, I'm happy enough with it for now.

we did the same setup on our SRT4s not too long ago. Yeah, its not as pretty as the manufactured ones, but sure saves alot of cash!
Nice

"Pretty" can be overrated. If it works, it works. As long as its a clean install, no one should **** about it. My 2 cents.

Excellent job! Looks like it does the trick. I admire your ingenuity.

Thank you! But I can take very little credit, I found the thread on another forum that had a good write up for the 4th gen.

Ok, I am really confused on this catch can thing. I have been reading up on the topic all over the web and cannot understand the entire concept. Maybe the first year of the 4th generation Ram but with the current year, 2013, I would have thought that the engineers at Chrysler would have seen an issue and taken care of it.

Please, someone explain the issue(s) that involves this and a possible reason why Ram has not issued a TSB or recall if major engine stuff can happen.
Thanks,
Birk

It's not a year/make/model "issue". It's a design flaw of the crankcase ventilation system for gasoline engines across the board. The catchcan is just the enthusiasts' way of combatting it.

Its NOT a design flaw, the PVC is doing what it was intended to do. Lets not mislead people.
The "oil catch can" IF designed right, separate`s the oil mist that travels back into the intake system.

Thanks for the clear up, I have owned a few MOPAR's and never heard of the issue nor seen it happen to my 318 (Ramcharger).

I disagree, its a flaw IMO. You're right that the PVC is doing what its supposed to do by ventilating the crankcase but engine oil inside the intake that makes its way to the combustion chamber sounds like a flaw to me. If it wasn't a flawed system, there would be no need to modify it with something like a catch can. Again, IMO.
