Default Another towing, gear question, lifted truck thread.

Hi everyone I'm new to the site and have spent a week or so looking up info he for I posted this. Here is my problem I need help with.

Right now I have a 2006 5.9L 3500 lifted megacab. I do tow a small 20 ft trailer and a boat the same length. But other than that I don't use it as I should. I don't put many km on the truck. Someone wants to trade me a 2012 big horn ram 1500 with 32KM leveling kit and 35s. It will tow my toys but it has 3.55 gears. I also want to put a side by side a few times a year in the back of the box. The truck has 9" air bags and the rhino ramps/deck is only 80lbs.

An I ggoing to be selling my self short with this 1500? Or will I be able to do this. I know the truck has the power but will the gears kill me? It's to expensive right now for me to spend the money and swap gears even though I would love to. Any advice would be great. Thanks for your time

3:55's w/35" tires = not good.

It'll tow, but not very well. Your gonna get sick your very first tow. My suggestion, have him hook up to your trailer so you can test it out while towing. This way, you know what your up against.
Just because my truck sits for the most part, doesn't mean I would rather have an s-10 to tow with. I want something that will do it right even if it were just a few times a month. I have my truck soley for that reason.

Also, your diesel should be getting same mpg's without towing and better mpg's w/towing than a gasser. IF you have a tuner to increase your gains.

It has a full ATS billet trans. Chip intake and exhaust. It gets good mileage but it's a little hard for my wife to drive and get the baby in when I take her jeep to work when it's my carpool turn to drive.

So the trailer and rhino would mean pretty terrible towing experience.

Also would a super chip make a difference in transmission shift points? Would the power increase make up for the high gears?

SC trans tune definitely helps out A LOT, but, you'll still lack the torque.
If I did the math correctly, it's a 17% torque reduction as compared to my 33" tires w/3:92 gears.

If it's a 2wd, just throw different gears in there. Prob $6-800 total.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. You should not be more than $2k anywhere going with all new parts( including bearings..etc) Heck, guys have had theirs done cheaper WITH a new Limited slip unit($550)

I'd have the guy give you $2g's and his truck for yours if he wants to trade.
Truck for truck...Yours is still worth more even though it's 6yrs older.
I just priced out your truck at 85kmi(not sure what you have and assuming SLT) base price not including tow, bedliner or any extras is $29.5k
His 2012 Bighorn @32kmi is $25.4k Then I'd add another $2k for lift and tires = $27.4k

So, if you have a Laramie, and any other option above his, yours is worth even more.

Mine is a slt. It has 172km on it. He also has leather and air gags.

The dealer said it needs a whole new front diff center section for the front. Going from a 355 to a 410. I even called down to the states and it's roughly the same price. Normal shops want 4500.

New carrier? for 4:10's? Never heard of that. The Power wagons come stock with 4:10's. I've heard that 4:56's would cause that, but not 4:10. Some guys still use stock carrier with 4:56's but simply shave one tooth to allow the clearance needed to slid the cross pin in.

$4500 is still outrageous. Sounds like nobody knows what they are doing and not something I would want to get involved with.

With the mileage you have, might be worth your while to just do the trade anyways, but that depends on how much you actually tow. once or twice a month..go for it. Once or twice every week...NO.
