Default 5th wheel towing

Just wondering if anybody can confirm if it's a good idea to put a 5th wheel on a 1500 crew cab with the 5.7H and 3.92 rear end. It's a smaller trailer, only 2952kg (6500lbs) GVWR and the truck does have the tow package. A 2014 with the 8spd transmission. I've tried looking on some RV sites but cant seem to find the right info. The max trailer rating according to Dodge is 7750 lbs but I'm hesitant. Anyone have a comment?

Wink 5th Wheel towing with a 1500

Hey, I'm new here; however, I think I can help you out some what. Before I got my Ram 2500 I was towing my 5th wheel (8,000lb) with my 1500 Laramie. It also had the 5.7 Hemi with the 3.92 rear end and had no problems. The only reason I traded it was that I wanted to go over some mountains on vacation and my brother who drove for a living; advised me to trade up due to the brake size. A 2500's brakes are twice the capacity of a 1500. But we towed our 5th wheel all over the Mississippi/Alabama coastal area with not problems. I hope this helps. A friend recommended the official Ram site for towing and hauling recommendations for my vehicle so maybe it can help answer some of your questions on towing capacity also. Here it is and good luck.

Thanks Bill. Appreciate the input. I am looking for something smaller as it's just the wife and I now. Keeping our options open between the 5th wheel and a travel trailer.

A friend of mine, and his wife are avid campers as well. And even though the kids are all grown up and gone, they are still going to a LARGER trailer..... More storage space for the necessities, and far more creature comforts. They even went and bought a 3/4 ton truck to pull it, as the half ton they had, was getting scary even with their travel trailer.

Default Forrest River Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite 8280

Yeah ours is a Forrest River Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite 8280. It's just my wife and I and our 34 year old daughter. She's mentally handicapped. I retired with disability, a busted knee and my wife is about to retire; so we are ready to hit the road. Our daughter lives with us, she is 100 dependent on us. We lost 3 kids to a drunk impaired/distracted driver 10 years ago; so we spend a lot of our time working a non profit we started. I don't know what your preference is; but we love our Rockwood.

Thanks for the information gents. We found a small 5th wheel with a couch slide out. Perfect size for the 2 of us with room for guests if necessary. We have taken a few trips and the truck has no issues pulling it. Gas mileage takes a bit of a beating but thats to be expected!
Bill, you and your wife sound like very special people. All the best in your joint retirement.
