Default Taking a 5000 mile trip... what speed should i run for best MPG?

ive heard it said that if you go over 65 then you lose lots of MPG... but ill be driving from los angeles to indiana and back again within a week and want to get decent mileage without taking an extra 5 hours...

ive done this drive before and it gets real boring going only 70 through az, nm and northern texas....

im looking to hit 80 and turn the cruise control on for a few thousand miles... i just wonder how much more that would cost me... if i can save a few mpg and maybe $100 in gas or whatever.. thatll be worth it..

someone know some math and can figure out time vs distance vs frustration factor vs kids crying vs wife bitching vs MPG

70 and over is not optimal.

What gears? I found with my 05, which had 3.92s and 20s it was somewhere between 60 and 65.

They say around 60 and then up from there will decrease mileage.

lol....like your algebra equation there at the bottom...

Forgot to mention, what you will want to do is get on the highway, set the cruise at 60, reset your MPG and drive 5 miles. Record MPG. Push to 65, reset MPG, drive 5 miles record. I think you see where I am going....

I admit it. I'm a math geek and I don't need much provocation to do this.

Just as a general rule of thumb figure a 1mpg drop for every 5mph from 55 to 85mph. This isn't real acurate but it keeps the math simple. Last trip I averaged 70mph @16mpg. So for 5000 miles I'd be looking at:
55mph 19mpg 263gal $526@$2/gal 91hrs.
60mph 18mpg 277gal $554@$2/gal 83hrs.
65mph 17mpg 294gal $588@$2/gal 77hrs.
70mph 16mpg 312gal $624@$2/gal 71hrs.
75mph 15mpg 333gal $666@$2/gal 67hrs.
80mph 14mpg 357gal $714@$2/gal 63hrs.
85mph 13mpg 384gal $768@$2/gal 59hrs.

So, is an additional 32 hours of frustration factor + kids crying + wife bitching worth saving $242 and 121 gallons of gas. I think not!

I have a buddy that works for a lab that tests fuel additives. He says the sweet spot is 57-64 mph. It would all depend on gears though. Personally, I think it would be best mpg wise to break the law going down the hills and **** people off by letting the momentum carry you a good ways up the next one. A tonneau and a K&N drop-in filter have helpled my highway mpg's a fair bit. It was either Andretti or Uncer (I think) that said that the best way to conserve fuel is to drive as if there is an egg underneath the gas pedal

I dont know if it was the gasoline along I-80 or what, but on my 08 QC with 3.92's I was getting 20 MPG, last November. From Wisconsin to Colorado and back. Traveling 75-80 mph

With my new truck, (3.55 gears) I set the CC at 68 MPG, according to my garmin, and I'll get 20 MPG, but locally we have a special boutique gasoline that gets crap mileage.

Guess I missed this while I was posting. LMAO. All of the greenies need to grow up, get married, and have kids before they can ever understand the logic that you have so elequently laid out here today.
