You hold the bolt to prevent it from turning, you turn the nut clockwise to compress the rivnut

Btw, if anyone needs any of these half hex head riv nuts, I have some to sell. I needed to buy some to install my old boards on my new truck. The dealer wanted like $5 a piece for them. I ended up buying 100 (smallest quantity I could find), so I have some extras. I have them on ebay (170336411020) at .99 each, but for dodgeforum members I will let you have them for .50 each (+ shipping $2 or $3 bucks depending on how many you want). I am not sure if they are the exact ones (all the specs are the same though), but they are M8x1.25 and they worked great on my truck. I gave the tech 6 of them for free and he installed my rivnuts at no charge with his riv nut tool.

As far as I am aware, the only way to buy these rivnuts are in the mounting kit package from the supplier. And that package I think is $25 plus a huge amount of shipping from Canada.

Thanks
Greg

these rivnuts suck. They spin in the hole even thiugh they r shaped like a nut on the outside. Ive come up with a plan. Ill try and see if i can get the bolt, nut, washer and last a rivnut on the bolt. Then ill put another nut on the opposite side of the rivnut. If u remove the tape covering thathole, i can get a closed end wrench in there. So ill grab that last nut on the inner wall of the body or the truck, and crush the rivnut between the 2 nuts. Then all ill have to worry about is getting the nut out without dropping it inside the body. I guess we will see. And just in case ill have a magnet standing by.

Are you sure you're following the procedure properly? When you have the bolt-nut-washer-rivnut assembly in the hole in the body, you're supposed to hold the bolt in one position, and push it towards the hole, while you turn the nut clockwise. If you're doing this properly, the rivnut can't spin, because the bolt isn't turning.

I have not heard of anyone that installs them properly having problems with spin out. I do know the round knurled rivnuts can be issue. But the hex ones eliminate that problem. I know some people have messed them up by over tightening them. Anyways, I am just offering up some extra to folks, I am not the one installing them.

Thanks
Greg

round ones suck, i have 2 in the ceiling of my 72 where i was gonna put a handle above the door, so I used the same rivnuts they used for the bvans, they just spin and well I left them there and put a handle on that is visible but useless.

im about to go out there and try installing 1 or 2 of these stupid things. ill let yall no what happens. by the way, do yall even trust these things to be sturdy enough after they are set? i mean if we can crunch the metal with a few short turns of the wrist, can we break it off with our body weight? its not like its a 1/4" thick steel washer or anything. just some swolen metal. oh well. here i go.

I mounted my old board using modified brackets to just these 6 nuts per side. I am 250+ and they do not even flex. There are stronger than you think, once they are mounted.

well im outta ideas. i dont know what im doing wrong. i went out there and took a 2" bold, a nut, washer, and the rivnut. i placed it in the hole, and bared down to keep it seated while i turned the nut with an opened end wrench. to no avail the damn rivnut keeps spinning even though it is hex shaped like a nut. i just gets cut and spins inside the hex cutout in the body where you stick the rivnut. i took it all out, placed another nut on the opposite side of the rivnut, basicly pinching the rivnut between 2 other nuts and that proved to be almost impossible. im pretty handy when it comes to stuff like this and i just cant figure out y i cant get what i need to happen.
