Default You Have To Be Kidding Me!

Has anybody else had trouble removing the original factory filter?

It took me three hours to get it off!

Typical. Many have that issue, I do not look forward to the 1st change. My 05 was the same way. I think they put them on dry.

I have not climbed under mine yet, but will be in a week since I ordered my Mufflex. If possible if you can get a filter wrench on it that fits (the ratchet kind), apply lots of pressure upwards into the filter and turn the ratchet it may work.

Started with what I always used, the big open circle type wrench that closes around the filter when you push the handle. Destroyed that.

Went to the store and purchased the filter cup that fits on the bottom of the filter, used a 3/8 ratchet and crushed the filter.

Eventually ran back up to the store and bought the filter wrench that resembles channel locks. That did the trick, with unbelievable muscle!

I have had the channel lock style ever since I got my duramax. Easier to reach the filter with those since the band clamp style require some room to work properly and if they slip it can be painful!

Yup, I used the band style wrench and ended up with similar results, a mess.
So much for hand tight! The ease of oil change is the only thing I miss from my Yukon!

Actually, getting at the filter is super easy! I was able to sit up and get my whole head up under the truck which gave me huge leverage (truck was on those plastic ramps). Without having that much room, I never would have been able to muscle that filter off.

I changed my oil with the truck on the ground. I used a band wrench and the filter came right off.

If a filter ever gets stuck I just hammer a screwdriver through it then turn it. It works well.

I have heard of this approach but I was afraid that the aluminum of the filter would just tear.

I'm not kidding when I tell you that I am soar this morning, like I went to the gym and worked my upper body.

This filter was welded on!
