Default Electronic Range Select On The 545RFE

Can anyone tell me if the Electronic Range Select on the 545RFE automatic transmission allows for the driver to actually hold the transmission in a selected gear similar to a manual transmission or if it only allows the driver to limit the top gear that the transmission will shift into but not limit what the lowest gear is? I have not been able to find the answer to this yet and I would like to know before I receive my 09 ram.
Thank You.

That was a horrible answer. It only limits the amount of gears you go through. If you leave it in 4 and punch it, the truck will downshift.

Thank You.
I have a column shifter with a gear selector on it that I can control my top gear with. It will still downshift when needed, but will never go above the gear you select. I can choose 1 through 5 or OD, and it tells you on the dash what gear you chose. I can even shift it from there, and believe it or not, they seem tighter when shifting myself. And each gear appears on the dash as you shift. I don't know what options are there for the trucks with floor shifters, though I would imagine something similar.

Thank you all, I thought that was how the system worked. I just thought I would clarify because I had a sellsman tell me that you could actually shift the transmission into 2nd to make it easier to take off in the snow. I thought that he was full of it but I didn't have time to take the truck out and show him.

Only the GM products will lock in 2nd gear rather than starting in 1st. The Chrysler tranny will allow you to limit up shifting until you bump the rev limiter. Yes, the tranny ratios are tighter when you shift yourself. There are actually 6 ratios that can be selected by the computer. The 2-3 auto vs manual will show a huge rpm difference in the two 3rd gears.

I am about 90% sure if you start with second selected you will actually be in first from a dead stop and it will go into second automatically.
