Default Tailgate Seals

I was going to install my tailgate seal today and found out you cannot use the traditional seal. The rubber bumpers the tailgate hits prevent a smooth and straight surface to adhere it to. I would have to cut it into 3 pieces on each side and it looks like it will not make any contact across the bottom.

So far it has not leaked even in a car wash. So, maybe I really don't need it?
It looks like Mopar does not have one for the truck.

The seal came with my "Undercover" bed cover.

If you are driving your truck throught car washes then why do you even care if it gets wet? I am not a fan of car washes they provide a multitude of swirl marks after one wash and well too many things to break off, mudflaps, sat antenna, radio antenna, if you have big tires and the height alone I could image the eventual dings in the aluminum hood. I should be writing this is a pet peave column sorry.

I use the car wash all the time in the winter on my car. Never used one with brushes, actually aren't many around here like that any more. They disappeared many years ago. Most all around here have the rotating wands or bars with spray nozzles that never touch anything. The laser measures the car up so it knows how far to stay away. No swirl marks and you get all the salt off in the winter without freezing your fingers off. Never drove any of my trucks in one though as I was afraid it would hit the mirrors. Have seen it done though. Just fold the mirrors in.

As for the seal, never used one. It takes quite a bit to get water in there if you have a cover on the bed. I've got a bed rug back there and it stays dry other than a few drips from when you open the tailgate off the tonneau.

The car wash I use is also brush-less, except for the wheel scrubber. What they do when it comes out of the wash is whats so impressive. They do such a good job people come from many miles away to get there cars and trucks washed here. They do a better job than I can.
I counted 10 employees on my truck alone one morning when they were a little slow. Everything gone over more than once and magnifying glass detail. They do not miss anything. Manager/Owners inspects it inside and out, before he allows the cleaners to release the vehicle. $20.00. I drive over 20 miles myself. It takes me half a day and it takes them 1/2 hour. Just like oil changes, it's to cheap to do it myself. Sometimes the line is so long they have to use the right travel lane that enters the car wash. You do not drive through the car wash. It pulls the car or truck through.

As far as the seal goes. I was told by another member of this forum that I would need it. It came with the cover.

I have seen those deals with the seal included. What kind of stuff are you hauling and do you have some kind of bedliner?

What I would do is try it as is and see if you can live without the seal. You'll be surprised I think in that being the gate overlaps the fenders back there, very little if any water will get in, even if you hold a hose straight on the seam. I've had a bedrug in the last two trucks and also considered a seal. But after seeing that not much of anything got in there, dropped the idea. Probably the only way water would get in is if you sprayed a ton straight up at the bottom of the tailgate between the gate and bed. In normal everday conditions, that isn't going to happen. Even in a big rain storm.

Just my opinion though, but it doesn't cost anything to try without and see if you need it. We haul camping and other stuff back there under the tonneau and things never get wet. Just hauled some furniture on the interstate in a bad rain and still nothing wet.

I probably do not need the seal. It has not been wet yet. Several straight line rain storms and the car wash all did not leave a drop in the bed. I have the "Undercover" top and factory bed liner. The cover does overhang on each side and back with a rubber seal in the front. The cover is designed just for the 09 ram crew cab. No trimming required. I am heading to Florida and we will have our luggage in the bed. I just wanted to be extra careful. Thanks for the feedback.
