Default Auto Starter Questions

Just got truck and wife and I were discussing the possibilities of having Remote Start Installed. Is this something that can be retro fit into the truck. The truck will mostly be used during the winter season, and it would be nice to come out to warm and thawed truck for the ride.

All help is appreciated.

Yes you can add the remote start. I did a month after purchasing my truck. From what I understand, it will be covered under the warranty if installed by a dealer.

If you have the remote keyless entry, you can install the Mopar system which is the same as installed from the factory.

Here is a link to the info including the instructions. The dealer has to activate after install with the star scan tool.

Can it still be done if you don't have keyless entry? I'm sure the dealer can install both right?

How much would cost be, for installation?

Default factor remote

Factor remote is useless, at best you might get 300 feet, go with an after market 2 way remote, you can get up to mile on distance and the two way tells you if it started.

The distance is terribly short. Plus I think after a certain amount of time the truck will turn off if the key isn't put in. I haven't gotten around to looking it up in the owner's manual yet, but it seems around 5 minutes and then it'll turn off.

+1

The range is WAY better on the aftermarket ones. My factory key/fob range sucks, but with some average decent aftermarket ones, you can park your car in the far end of the walmart parking lot and stand in the far back end of the store and start your car. And it makes confirmation noises to let you know if it locked and if the remote start was sucessful or not. Much better choice imho. Not terrible on price. A place here was selling them for $189 plus free installation. My new ram doesn't have it yet, but my old explorer did and it worked very well.

Default Do the aftermarket installers ...

cut or tap into wires as opposed soldering connections? Can they just plug into the existing wire harness? I only ask because I'd be nervous an aftermarket installer might not spend the time to do it right and after a couple of years there would be electrical issues. Just thinking ahead.

well I talked to the dealer today, they said that the remote start add on works off of the factory keyless entry and not having it installed negates the remote start. They said it wasn't possible.

Looks like its aftermarket for me! Probably for the better, what are the best kits out there right now?

So they said it wasn't possible at all? Do you not have power locks at all? If you do, I find it very odd that it's not possible at all. So far everything I've seen and read on the parts of the 2009 RAM seem very plug and play. I'd be surprised that Dodge would prewire everything else on these trucks but require an electrical overhaul for the remote door and remote start options.

Screw it thought, save yourself some money and get a better system by going aftermarket.
