That would definitely be the easy way.

They may save some $$$, but there is not much markup in gears - so unless they are doing hundreds of sets the average shop pays what I pay. Just make sure they are using quality parts, you can save a few bucks and get some pretty crappy bearings and gears.

On my 06 F150 FX4 I swapped out 3.73's for 4.56's. Went with Yukons. Complete job from a trans and rear speciality shop for front and rear for gears , labor and rebuild kit ( you cannot reuse crush sleeves but I still bought the entire kit along with the ring and pinions since I already had 25k on the truck when I did the gear swap ) was $2200.00 You guys that talk $1200, that's a great price !

4:10 gears for a 9.25 - $331
Master Install kit for the newer 9.25 $185
Auburn LSD for 9.25 $420
Gear oil - $20

You're at $956 just in parts
Thanks for the run down. I'll definitely check with them to see if all that's included, then make them put it in writing everything they're planning on doing for the $1200 price. Mine is a 4x2, so at least I only have one to worry about.

I just changed to 4.10 gears and added a front locker to my wife's GMC Canyon pickup truck, and picked it up from the shop today, so the prices are pretty recent. It cost $960 for parts, which included front and rear ring and pinion gears, new ring gear bolts, new seals, crush sleeves, pinion nuts, and a lockright locker (the locker alone was $365). So without the locker the gears alone would have been ~$600. Installation cost, including the cost of gear oil, was $1064. So total cost for front and rear gear change on the GMC Canyon pickup was $1664.
