Local audio store told me the cheapest and most sensible way to get better sound from the Alpine is to upgrade just the amp. Said they would disconnect the amp, leave it in, install the new and run new wires. Does that make sense? Anyone done something like this without replacing the speakers? Any reason not to consider it?

I would consider anything to make the Alpine sound better. Perhaps the speakers too? Going to replace mine with a Pioneer or Kenwood when I can get around to it. If that doesn't help then its the speakers.

Wouldn't changing speakers first make more sense? IMO.

Yes it would if the speakers are the issue. My intention is to get a unit with GPS built in, full system. If, at that point, the sound does not improve I will have my answer
I really think mine sounds good. Not the best I've heard, but not ready to replace mine yet. I really am impressed with the factory Alpine in my truck. But, like I said it could always be better.
i actually replaced the rear 6x9s with an aftermarket speaker there is some improvement but not as much as expected the factory are fairly decent,i plann on adding a stronger amp to the rear 6x9 and the sub.if i had to do over i would do the amp first
