Ren
oooohhhh. i might be waiting for this. im sure someone will make an adapter or whatever.. with my experience the rer unit is the biggest piece of crap anyone has ever made!! the ren is probably better because it doesnt do nav. but im sure the newest unit is better because of a diff. manuf.
Well why would you say another manufacturer would be better? First year would they be any better than Harmon Becker ? Why did they just not stay with Infinity I wonder, they were good. I personally think these things over heat. I wasn't gonna bother getting one but for 250 bucks and I picked it up from a tech in Michigan figured should work out since the uconnect i bought is the same one that goes with my cheapo original radio, so radio swap if it takes a bum. Hope it won't.
I've got a 2010, and it still came with a REN. It only freezes when selecting next song on the HDD. But all I have to do is hit the "NEXT" button again and it works..
One thing to remember is that if it is the model with a hard drive, it is a computer. Ever have a computer lock up for no good apparent reason? If it continues to happen it could be related to heat, the audio units generate a pile of therms. Lay your hand on yours after you play it for a bit. Even in the winter, remember the truck is warmer and the audio unit is still generating heat.
Another question would be if it has ever happenned with the audio units controls that are on the unit.
The wheel controls just send a signal to the main unit to do their jobs. The unit itself has the interface to do that, and again the unit is the one with the heat on it.
This is just one reason that I can see this happenning. One of the others could be some interference from any aftermarket electronic controls that may have been installed, as well as the unit itself is intermitten or just prone to having this happen.
The next time it happens, do not touch a thing, drive to the closest dealer, do not turn off the truck, and ask them to come and see it happenning.
I am having trouble with the electronic info unit on my 2009 1500 with all the temp readings. Ambient air, trans, and coolant readouts. All three can vary up and down at times, and all the sensors have been replaced. I keep telling them it is the control unit(the computer).
Just some possible input from an audio/puter nut.
Good Luck
