Default OEM backup camera / general rant

I bought an 09 Laramie back in July. I asked the dealer about adding the backup camera to the existing REN. They wanted $1k to do it. I told them it was only worth a couple hundered to me. (seems like building one on Dodge.com it was a $200 option)

Anyway - Fast Forward to Christmas. To my surprise, my fiance got me the OEM kit. I installed it over the weekend, took it over to the dealer today to have it activated. The lady asks "who put it on?" Upon telling her 'me' she got a bit less friendly... told me to wait around a few minutes. She goes in the back to talk to the tech. Comes out and tells me it "will be a few days before we can get to it cause we are so busy" and that it will be $127.50 to do it.

I had to take it back after my initial service inspection to get the RRTs done cause they didn't do them the first time. My initial oil change was $95. They didn't sign the warranty page in the manual when they did the initial service inspection...

Anybody know a good dealer in the central alabama area?

Ya eh, it's like you are punished for being mechanically capable. I install a REN radio and the Mopar u-connect kit. Simple installation, even a caveman could do it. Anyway you get to this part about going to dealer for Star Scan....okay I have a few RRT's and a Recall to take care of. Long story short, truck is at dealer for 7 hours, wife finally leaves after paying 2 bills one for the first time they tried it and one for the second, both not working, also tried to bill for an oil change they decided I needed at 4000 kms and I just had one done at 2000 and 3 months prior,do they not know their own recommendations? 6 months or 10000kms, but I do 5000kms or 3 months anyway so when I complained to Customer Service at Chrysler about having to pay for something they could not accomplish, I agreed to pay for the oil change because it was close to my schedule. Next day at another dealer, all day again this time they ask who installed, when I said me right away they wanted one hour to take it apart and inspect the installation, I told them during lunch since it was I would take the dash apart and the radio screws out so they could inspect and we split the bill...they agreed. My feeling was if the installation was good then I should get my money back or not pay but that was not theirs. Skip to good install even tried a new module and radio..same crap.
Turns out whatever the day before the other dealer did they did not do something right that was causing the problems. So it cost me hundred bucks.
I wanted to put the uconnect in my sons 08 avenger I was told basically that if I install it they cannot guarantee that they can scan it in one hour so I might have to pay more. Customer Service will get a phone call and I will get a letter from them stating that unless the installation is done incorrectly I only have to pay the half hour that Chrysler would pay them to do it

Tell them there are several hungry dealers out there and you will pay the book time alotted or you will go somewhere else.

I am going to do the aftermarket way with the aftermarket module that lets you hook up 3 cameras, watch movies while driving and more. 199 for that and some ebay cameras and away we go. I like the idea of this cause as soon as you back up the cam go to rear then when you shift and going under 8mph you get the front cam. Will be great for parking. Third camera is for baby but I think I might use it for something else. Cool think is you can flip to whatever camera while driving. If your movie is done LOL.

If you are talking about the lock pic. It will let you control 2 cameras not 3.One rear, one front or baby camera. Why pay for a dealer scan, when the lock pic lets you have full control.

After all that you must be in the Montgomery area! Try Clanton, I bought mine there but haven't used their service dept. Had no complaints with the purchase.

Yep. It was kinda odd... I got the truck from the dealer here in Montgomery, but the stickers and all had the Tallassee dealers name all over it. I am curious about their service, it's a bit closer than Clanton. I am headed up toward B'Ham this weekend, so I may give them a try and see if they can work me in as I pass through.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I installed an aftermarket camera on my truck. I picked up the LocPic to make it all happen.

A friend of mine there takes his truck to Tallasee and he has never had any problems. I never had any good expierences with the one in Montgomery. I drove to Prattville when I lived there but I understand that dealership closed. Good luck

Screw the dealer and they're nonsense...

If your capable of installing the camera go further and get the OEM power tailgate lock kit (Do some digging there is one) And it'll work with your keyless.

But the Red/white wire you plumbed into the fuse box? Remove it as its Reverse only power...

Route it into the dash and buy a lockpick (Your halfway there on the price by getting the dealer to "turn it on")

The lockpick has Power leads for several options and NOW you can use that very same camera ALL THE TIME.... Nice for towing or looking at people tailgating you etc..

PLUS you can watch DVD's in drive or install a front mount camera and switch between them at your leisure.

Ive got 2 Lockpicks now on two of my trucks and I mean it isn't PERFECT but for the ability I have now awsome product.

www.coastaletech.com/MYGIG.htm

And if you've got a higher end Minivan the Babycam idea is sweet...Installed one for a customer of mine.

Honestly theres two problems Ive encounterd with the unit and they're minor

1.) Once in a while the audio will stop for about 4 or 5 seconds and come back (In an hour it'll do it like once or twice) ...I live with and its not to bad
2.) When performing your connections with the plug and play harness use a zip tie to secure the middle harness they're connector doesn't have a positive CLICK
3.) Enjoy!

That sucks man, good luck finding a dealer, Im up in Canada and I get the same thing everytime I go into any dealer here. its Like If you try to do anything to save money they're really gonna screw you over and get it outta ya somehow. And the worst part is they got you screwed because its hard to find a starscan anywhere but at a dealer.
I do all my own maintenance, service and repairs, If theres something I cant do it goes to an indepentant local repair shop unless its warranty.
Ive even paid to have some things fixed that would normally be covered under warranty, (if they're minor, inexpensive) just to keep my rig outta there!!!

A little warning to those installing the OEM cam by themselves, I did mine back in the summer, took to the dealer, they owed the flash due to all the manuals they wanted for stuff on my trade, anyways it sat with them all day, and they could not get it to work, told me they had the smartest guys in the business look over the install and everything looked great (I am very mech. inclined) but figured the cam was bad, so I went home and diagnosed it myself in 5 minutes and had it working in another 5 minutes, as it turned out the cable that connects from the cam to the harness that runs under the truck had the power wire and another wire backwards in that harness, cut wires and reversed and fixed problem, but you know it took them all day and they still couldn't figure it out. If you have had the function turned on on the Nav system or REN make sure the cam is gettin power at the connection to the cam if it isn't then you have the same problem I had.
