Default What synthetic oil to use?

What's up everybody, I'm fairly new to the site so I'm not sure if there was another thread about this, I own a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport Hemi and I was just wondering how many of you have switched or are going to switch to synthetic oil. I want to change my oil at about 2500 kilometers with regular oil then change it at another 2500 kilometers to synthetic. I was thinking about using Royal Purple synthetic, but I would like to know what type of oil's people are using or going to use. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Keeping it simple....Mobil 1 Extended, or the new Castrol Edge...others are followers in MHO. Do your own research..you will make a realistic opinion too. Good Luck
I have been using Mobil 1 since 1984, never a oil lubricated part problem...

I'm sure this question is going to start another Amsoil vs. the rest debate... but....

You can't go wrong as long as you stick to the major labels (Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Castrol, etc)... I've run both Mobil 1 and Royal Purple in all my vehicles for 15+ years and have never had a problem... I have two stories:

1) I'm staged at the race track in my '87 Grand National. My transbrake is 1st Gear. I have about 15# of boost built waiting for the light. Light goes green and I move the shifter to drive, but the neutral safety switch breaks and the shifter slams into Reverse. I got out of it and on the brakes quick, but the car actually launched in reverse at 15# of boost... I was running Royal Purple at the time in the Engine, Tranny, and Rear end..... Everything stayed together and I'm still running on that same Tranny 5 years later...

2) My sister had the oil changed in her Nissan Murano. She left the oil change place and made it about 20 miles away when she noticed a strange sound from the engine.... she drives 20 miles back to the place and the manager discovers the engine had only 1 quart of oil (4 short). After filling the rest up, firing the tech, and signing an agreement to fix any issues as a result of this, the engine is still running fine.... She's run Mobil 1 in it since she got it back in 2003 (120k miles ago)....

Two different stories.... two different synthetics.... two NIGHTMARE problems for your drivetrain... I've got no scientific data, but I'm convinced the "good" oil in each had a LOT to do with the survival of both....

Hope this helps!

If your going to change your oil every 3,000 miles, don't use syn oil, your wasting money, on the othier side of the coin, if your going to work your truck, cold starts, long periods of ideling, stop and go driving than use syn oil.

I do know people who change syn oil every 3,000 miles, you don't have too, syn oil will go longer betwean oil changes, but dirty oil is dirty oil, only change when dirty.

I use mobil 5 20 syn.

Well I'm going to change my oil at 2500 kilometers for the first two oil changes. Then when I switch over to synthetic I will go around 6000-7000 kilometers in between changes depending on the driving that I'm doing at the time.

I am with RT on this one. No one here really can say A is better than B when it comes to syns. Any of the bigger names is a good choice.

That sounds like a good plan... although I'd probably go 8-9000 km's of routine driving before changing a synthetic......

Funny I haven't used synthetic and haven't have an oil related problem either.

remove 6 quarts from your engine, drive 40 miles, and let us know how it goes...

Like I said, much debate will come from this thread... and I've got no real data to support my love for synthetics... but based on my two extreme experiences, I know synthetic isn't any worse than dino... so I err on the side of safety...

I ran non-synthetic in my 93 Toyota while I had it and it ran perfect...

well, i too run mobil 1 in all my vehicles. mainly because you can find it anywhere....

if you run a "top end" syn. you will be fine. afterall this isnt a race car forum. most of us will never be using their truck to the point, that one syn. would outshine the other imho....

also. if you bought the truck to last you a long time, whats the extra couple $$ on syn oil? i would rather have a little peace of mind i put the "best" oil/maint. parts etc. in my vehicle than some junk oil, that might not perform the best.. regardless of what brand. for the people that believe reg. oil is just as good. how come top end sports cars, come from the factory with syn?
