Default Rust update

So, went to the stealership, and they said that my little speck of rust (on rear bumper) is from a rock chip, therefore not covered by warranty. So of course, I questioned him on if it was covered under warranty would they switch from the chrome to a painted one. The answer was NO, the 'painted bumpers' come from their supplier with just primer... Therefore dodge would not pay to have it painted your body colour under warranty. The service manager suggested I wait a bit until it starts rusting somewhere else and it would be covered... Or, if I planned on getting away from the chrome anyways, would be to get it sanded and painted, or powdercoated, or bedlined... He admitted the chrome was thin, and will rust if it is put through any kind of abuse (including a dusty wind)...

There's the update, hope my experience maybe helps a bit...

For now, i shall give it a really fine sanding, and put some touch up on it (as it is not in a very visible spot) until i decide what to do...

Default 2010 Dodge Ram 1 month old under 500 KM - Rusty Chrome Bumpers

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram SLT for one month, it has less than 500 kms, brand spanking new.

The rear bumper has little tiny rust spots on the outer side edges, and some on the back rear side of the bumper. The truck has not seen salt or snow yet. There is no excuse for any rust to be there, not at this early stage.

The chrome plating on these bumpers are extremely poor, and the metal beneath is very thin and cheap in quality. Basically, Dodge went cheap on these bumpers / finish.

Tomorrow morning, it will be at a dealership to see what they tell me. If it will be replaced or not.
Really there is no excuse. I want it documented that the rust was present this early in the purchase and the bumper replaced. No excuses later, when they will be replacing the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, .... until they get the parts manufacture make them right with a bit of quality.

Yes, chrome does rust over time, but not within a month, or even 6 months. No excuses, lets see if Dodge or Chrysler Corp have ***** to back up their manufacturing flaws, and replace bumpers and not BS excuses to wash their hands of being responsible.

Let you know how it plays out at the dealer.
Thanks

I had the same problem. I've had my Ram for a year and I've had the front bumper replaced due to rust spots a few weeks ago. I'm getting one of the nerf bars and rear bumper replaced because they also have rust. I asked about getting the painted ones and the dealer said no because Chrysler will only replace what came with the vehicle. I would have to pay for the painted ones if I wanted them. I told him I would pay the difference, but they said there was no difference in price.

I noticed today that my back bumper has a rust spot and is discolored all above the stock exhaust tip. I got 95% cleaned up today. Still a bit of rust in the one spot but shiny every where else. The whole passenger side section is not very smooth though. I also noticed on the top where it meets the black step, on both sides on the corners it is very pitted. No rust or anything, just they chromed a very unsmooth surface. It isn't bad enough to hit the dealership yet, but when it is, I will be there. I can see a dual exhaust bumper in my future. Now I just need the front to go so I can jump up to fogs!

I have the grey painted bumper and noticed that a few tiny rock chips have started rusting. I asked the dealer for touch up and they told me there isnt any because Dodge doesnt have a paint code for it. They said I would have to use a generic grey touch up paint. While I have been trying to decide what to do the rust is spreading like wild fire. I went to a body shop and they claim that the paint was applied to bare metal. They do not believe it was even primed. I am thinking about having the bumpers sanded, primed and sprayed to match the body. That would cost around $700. I also thought about buying chrome bumpers but it sounds like they have similar problems as well. I purchased mine on March 31, 2009, less than a year later and my front bumper looks like the face of a 15 year old after an 8 hour shift working the deep fryers at Burger King. What the heck?

Anyone familiar with the clear stick on bumper covers like these? Good or bad experiences?

That's the same story the dealer gave me. My painted rear bumper had freckle rust all over it. It had one spot where the paint had started to peel in the middle right below the plastic section where the license plate. The lady who ran the shop told me it was a stone chip. I told her, I am sorry but that is not a stone chip. I told her a stone chip would be a piece of paint missing or a chip missing. You would not get that peeling paint within a month of buying the truck. Plus, for a stone to hit the section, it would be one crazy defiance of physics. I told her my specialties in my field is paint. I am a bridge engineer and one of my responsibilities is paint evaluation and rehab on bridges. She told me that all she could do is give me touch up paint and clay bar the bumper. I give it a year or two before they give me a new bumper.

Default 2010 Dodge Ram Rusted Chrome Bumpers with 580 KM 1 month old.

Here is the deal.

I called into my service advisor sunday morning and left a voice message about my truch rear bumper having rust spots.

This morning i drove there, as soon as i entered the service bay, his response was "no worries, new bumper has been ordered, let you know when its in". Then he asked me if the front hasn't already started, which it has not yet.

Anyway, the service at this one dealership is absolutely amazing.
They service all my other vehicles; about 10 of them, and some are not even Chrysler products. They fix problems great, never had to go back after a repair, because it was not done properly, etc....

They do great work, no hard time, really down to earth and no BS. If its a manufactures f*cked up part, they fix, no worries. I really didnt expect them to give me a hardtime at all with this bumper issue.

So all is well.
