Driving Lights for Bull Bars
We just got our truck back after having a set of IPF 768 driving lights installed on the new bull bar.
We took them out into the middle of nowhere last night (no light pollution, pitch black!) to test them out and set up their positioning.
The IPF 768's (with the 100w H3 bulbs) were recommended to us as being the best out there (and only $170 bucks) with a "why spend $1000 on PIAA's, or go with the old-design KC HiLites for twice the price, the IPF's are just as good" explanation on why to go with them.
We were quite disappointed by the light output of these lights. They come on with the high beams, and honestly, while they do supplement the high beams a bit (only because they can be aimed to shoot where the high beams don't reach), there is not the drastic difference we were anticipating.
I aimed them to point quite high, and slightly outwards, to help look into the bushes and ditches for deer and other wildlife when driving on road trips, and it makes it a little bit "easier on the eyes" to not strain to make things out as much when driving at highway speeds, but like I said, not a DRASTIC difference.
I am wondering - do I simply have too high an expectation of auxiliary lights?
Are there ANY lights that will REALLY light up the road and make us feel like they are 5x better than our regular headlights?
Would HID's make a big difference? I wanted to stay away from HID's since apparently they are not road legal and they come on with high beams, so they would be on/off all the time, killing longevity.
Unfortunately lights don't seem to be a returnable item - so I don't really want to spend $1200 on a set of new lights only for us to be stuck with something not much better than our $170 IPF's.
Thanks!

I bought a set of Lightforce 170's about 7 years ago and used them quite a bit for offroad use. It was amazing how much light they put out.

i'd say, try the HIDs for your lows and get your fogs done too. cost will be around 110 if you install them yourself. get 6K, adjust your lows up and i think you'll be surprised of the light output. I have the 8K, but might go to 6K later. when driving next to another truck or car on the road, my lights dominate the road and you can't even see theirs. I can only imagine 6K of pure white, mine are a little to much on the blue side...
Stay away from dark blue, more than likely you'll get pulled over. like i said, i have the 8k which is more blue than i would like, but i've passed cops, stopped behind cops and drove past on coming cops and have had no issues.

So I have an Aries Bull Bar on order and want to know what size round lights will fit in it?
Aries rep recommended 5.25" but want to know if PIAA 520 series will fit (6" plus 1/2" mounting space)
Or the 540 seies?
Will the Hella 500's fit?
Thanks, jc
