Default Front End Clunking Noise

Has anyone else had any front end noises when you hit bumps and pulling in and out of driveways?

Our's has developed a clunk on the passenger side when we are pulling out of the drive. Sounds like a tie rod end or something....

It will be going in for its next oil change in a couple of weeks. I plan on bringing it up then.

I had a noise in the front end when I first got the truck. I tracked it down to the plastic hood adjustible stops rubbing against the inside of the hood when going over bumps. The noise sure sounded like it was coming from the wheel well. I placed a piece of weather striping (self adhesive) on top of the stops. Problem solved. Don't know if that is your problem or not.

I've got the same noise, myself. I primarily hear it when I'm turning out of my driveway and one tire hits the gutter before the other. I will have to check the hood bump/stops. It'd be wild if that was the issue, Mike.

Default Update!

Well, we had the dealer look at the front end and they found the right tie-rod end and the right lower ball joint had excessive play.

WTF??? It's only got 24,000kms (15,000 miles), not off road, highway only. Drive around the pot holes etc. Seems a bit early for this....

I wanted to get it checked out because our '06 Ram chewed the front tires off due to tie rod ends.

good to know, Bill, I'll have to get it checked out the next time I head in for an oil change. Adjusting the stoppers on the hood didn't resolve it for me.

Good advice Mike. I had the same problem and thought it was something in the fender well. Another person in my office also has a 09 Ram 1500 said he tracked down the "rattle" to the same spot and had the dealer put some silicon tape on the bottom of the hood to fix the problem. So far I have just laid an old rag on top of the hood stop/posts but the rattle went away.

They had to order the lower A arm and tie rod end so they will install them next week they figger.

I have been able to hear it going over bumps in the road etc. I just don't want to have to buy a new set of these 20" tires anytime soon!!

Those plastic hood stops are adjustable in height you know. They turn clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower in height. They have detents so they sort of snap into place every quarter turn or so. It is true that they will cause a clunk noise from time to time if they are not adjusted properly.

Update!

Well, they finally got the parts in and installed today.

They ended up putting BOTH lower control arms on and the right outer tie rod end.

I'm still kinda wondering why these parts would wear out already.

It does feel nice and tight again (the steering that is).

Wonder whom the vendor is that makes them?
