K&N CAI is on
Well I spent an hour washing, then said may as well.....
Took 90 minutes. I took my time and also pulled the throttle body off and cleaned it. Instructions are very good, no worries. If you can change oil you can put this on.
Impressions? I am not jumping up and down for joy, but it did make some changes. Some of which not everyone will like.
1. The sound of the intake itself. It does not bother me, but with the radio low or off at certain RPMs you can really hear it moving the air.
2. The sound of the exhaust, it made it deeper and louder (I have a Mufflex 14).
3. Performance? Lets keep in mind I went from a drop in K&N and not a stock paper filter. Seat of the pants, I really do not feel anything. With that said I did do two 0-60 runs with SC logging the times. Before CAI I had a 6.21 and a 6.11 and I thought there may have been room for improvement on the 6.11 due to my launch. It was somewhat sunny that day and in the 50s. Fast forward to tonight. Dark and 49, so the roads were a little cooler (which is not good when it is this cool). I made two runs again. First was a 5.91, great launch, probably not going to do much better given the conditions. The second I pushed the launch a little harder and had some tire spin and ended up with a 6.01. So based on a device the CAI did help a little. Maybe a tenth on 0-60 over the drop in. And to be honest, in a heavy truck, if the numbers K&N give are accurate (again keeping in mind I had a drop in), a 15HP increase and similar TQ increase is not going to amount to much more than .1 on 0-60. So while I am not jumping up and down I think it is giving you what is advertised.
The question has been asked, which should I buy, tuner or CAI. Your answer is a tuner! Much better bang for the buck.
MPGs? Look for info in a week or two on that.
Pics... The TB off the truck, dirty, solution and after. Followed by the engine with all parts out that had to come out, then then finished product.

That part where it looks like it dives into no mans land is against the foam seal on the fender vent hole. There is no doubt in my mind it is "not sealed" like the factory airbox though. I tried to see how well it was hitting the hood as I closed it slowly, it seem to hit, but some of the bends on the box leaves some gaps.

No, the filter did not do that. The outside part (before the butterfly) was clean. It is the part under the butterfly that gets dirty. Did you open your butterfly and look or just pull the tube and look at the outside part? Open the butterfly, stick your finger down inside and wipe the edge.....
